IS THERE some treatment beyond castration which is of benefit if the tumor has already spread?
Some folks might not choose chemotherapy/ radiation/further surgery for their dog.
I'd only go hunting for enlarged nodes if there was a rational therapy ahead should they be found.
She stated that this test would help with the treatment options if the cancer was found to have spread. I didn't pursue it further because I figured I would cross that bridge when I came to it. At this point, it's worth $400 to me to prove it's not there. Peace of mind I guess.
Everyone needs to do what they need to do and your own vet is your best source of info, but it's good to keep in mind that no test can ever prove cancer hasn't spread yet, only "we don't see any at this time".
Sometimes that's enough to ease your mind though, and that can be worth the money for sure.

I understand, thanks for all the information! I will be sure and bring that up as well as the possibility of repeating this test annually or bi-annually. If I know when the tests should be done, I can at least have time to budget accordingly. This one just kind of shocked me with the cost. I was expecting it to be a couple hundred dollars. Live and learn...
Just to update the thread: Apollo got a clean bill of health at his appointment this week. The ultrasound tech was a professor from Michigan State University and did a very thorough exam. Apollo didn't like it at all, but he got through it. She went through all the major organs, his lymph nodes, etc. They noted that his prostate had shrunk approximately 50% since he was neutered.
