Went to 5 different hospitals, finally had in Denver. Man! I remember looking that tanned (or trying to). The things we did in the 60s (well before your time) .... lie on a flat roof covered with baby oil (oh, THERE'S a good protective shield) with pieces of toothpicks holding toes apart so we wouldn't have unsightly white between-toes area (you all surely know how awful that looks if you accidentally flex a toe in sandals) .... adding a little iodine to the baby oil in an emergency (a dance in three days) .... Of course, we had the huge bonus of frosty white lipstick, which made even normal skin look more tanned. Or at least less white than our lips.

That WOULD be funny! I remember not worrying about sun exposure at all, and my mom laying in the sun for hours on what looked like a big piece of tinfoil. My family is predominantly Irish and Native American and my mom (and sister) definitely took after the Native American side so she would get crazy-dark. I think her naturally dark complexion (which also came with naturally jet-black hair) saved her from looking like an old saddle now that she's older, but she got LUCKY. She wore the light, frosted lipstick too. It was an interesting look! My Irish complexion doesn't appreciate the sun so much.
