You guys that like bettas might like this.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Iv6JZ6LObug
I made it a few years ago from a thread on a fish forum of people posting pictures of really cool bettas they'd seen on Aquabid. My favorite is at 43 seconds in.
Bettas are simple to care for but if you get a 10g or larger tank their personalities realy start to come out. 10g tanks are cheap too. Mine were in the $5-10 range. You will pay more for some betta "tanks" that hold literally less than a cup of water. You can also have a lot of fun with decorations. Floating plants like duckweed or frogspawn are available for free or a couple dollars in most places and bettas like having the overhead cover.
Let the tank water level go down a bit and then you can feed small flightless fruit flies or pinhead crickets. It's lots of fun to watch and very healthy for the betta. The maggots out of the fruit fly culture are good to feed too. A few larger shrimp(ghost or cherry shrimp adult size) make for an interesting companion and they help keep the tank muck down. Some bettas will pester the shrimp but most just ignore them or follow them around.
I miss having fish. Obiviously I can't have any here but I had them in the barracks for awhile.
SO... Ideal scenario, how would you set up the perfect Betta tank? Now I'm feeling like a horrible Betta owner. I want to give my poor guy better for the rest of his life. I've had Cichlids, so I know how to set up a 'real' fish tank and keep it healthy with the fish happy, but what is the ideal set up for a Betta?

I would go with 5 or 10 gallon tank with a small filter, light and small heater. Bettas actually prefer slightly warmer water and there energy goes way up with temps in the 76-80 range.
I prefer sand bottoms because the sand doesn't seem to trap waste as easily and also holds plants better. You don't have to spend the big bucks on fishstore sand, playsand, pool filter sand, and many other types are perfectly fine and way cheaper.
Then I would toss in some overturned clay pots, or mopani wood or decorations, they like to swim through stuff and hide in stuff.
Add in some really simply plants like duckweed, or hygrophillia or anubias/java fern.
Whala! Betta Heaven!!
I also like to add in an apple snail, or some cherry shrimp, or even a trio or quad of the dwarf corydoras. Most Bettas are perfectly fine with non Betta Tankmates.

Now we need a little "betta happy dance" emoticon!! This darn thread has got me crusing through that aquabid site... I HATE the thought of a poor little fish coming to me in a box vi snail mail however, although I know this is how fish get to stores every day!

My cat does not bother the fish, oddly enough! Never did, even when I had huge tanks that were fully stocked. The gecko's, however... she'd really like them for a mid day snack.

Just ordered my future Betta's new 12 gallon home. I'll start cycling a bucket of water to get the good bugs growing and start my Betta shopping (window shopping only till tank is up and running and safe).
Jennifer, I hold you personally reponsible, well and you too Kelly. Which one of you is willing to assume responsibility of said fish should I expire first? (hehehe)
ETA: no where near as exciting as Dennis' new pup, but I'll post pics anyway.

LOL.... just put my address in your will.
I didn't get around to upgrading everything for my Betta today. He did get a nice live plant though. Small improvement, but still better then nothing. Lizards needed a bigger tank, so that had to come first.
Yes Barbara, we will need pictures!
