Stephanie,
Those raw marrow bones you can get in the meat department are also awesome. They are about 6" long. If you give them to the dog frozen, they are great for teething! After a couple of hours, I will take the bone and stick it back in the freezer for another time. It's usually good for a few days of this, depending on the dog.
They are messy, however, so I reserve them for crate time.

oh pictures. MY WORD i haven't even thought about pictures! i'm on that right now! Oh and raw bones and bully bones it is!
I heard somewhere waaaay back when if you hold the bone while they chew it it creats some kind of respect. is that true? just throwing out as many crazy things i have heard in the past out there..that way i can re-train my brain

I haven't heard this. I have heard of feeding your dog from your hands while the dog is at your left leg in the heel position to reinforce that "muscle memory" but not the bone thing. I prefer to let my dogs have their bones in peace and to enjoy them with no fear of my taking them back. They are given their high value treats apart from each other and left alone to enjoy at their own speed.
I do recommend teaching the "out" command so that you CAN take something from them if needed. When I DO ask for their bone for what ever reason, I offer something in return - a piece of beef or something else yummy as a "fair trade".
I have given VERY young pups large sized frozen carrots to knaw on. Need to be carful to watch that they don't start chomping off a piece, though. Once they are big enough to bit off a piece, I no longer use these.
Also I freeze a tight weaved hand or dish towel, wet it, wring it out & roll it up & freeze it. Give it to the pup frozen & keep an eye & take it away when it starts to thaw.
I would stay clear of any kind pig ears, hooves etc, 'fake' bones from the pet stores, rawhides or anything like them(they are not digested if swallowed & will cause an obstruction). The more natural(untreated) the food the better. Also the nylabones are dangerous. They do not disolve& will cause an obstruction if swallowed. My male as a 6mo old pup bit off a large piece of one of these that were supposed to be for large dog agressive chewers. Fortunately I was right there & took both pieces away & into the trash & never again.
I never feed anything, not even their raw meals, without being right there with them....just in case. Not even as adult dogs. Pups, especially, with any kind of food or toy are never more than a few feet away from me at all times.
These both work well for young teething pups. Frozen stuffed kongs, bully sticks, & cold small marrow bones( I don't give frozen ones). I would NOT give multiple marrow bones a day, though, as it will cause 'the runs' as the marrow is very rich like organ meat is.
