You'd have to sell me on the pig, but the rest fits in with my dreams. I would like an alpaca herd for their fiber, and of course a great big indoor dog training arena.

Wow, Betty. That sounds idyllic. Priorities sure change as we get wiser with age. In my 20s it was important to live in a "hip" neighborhood with lots of action. In my 30s moved to a quieter part of town, habituated by mostly people in their 30s. Now I'm out in the 'burbs and I LONG for life in the country.
If I needed to "make a living" it would be much more difficult. Gainsville is commutable about it's a good hour away via interstate to exit. Door to door would probably be closer to 2 then to one.
I'm messing around with the idea of sub. teaching and maybe going for my teaching certificate just to have something to fall back on. Florida has a program for non education majors that makes it pretty simple.
And I play around with the idea of opening up some kind of small consignment or second hand store downtown. Always thought that would be kind of cool.
We have a local store in Tacoma that is called Second Hand Hound. I love it! We are friends with the owners, and they peruse craigslist, ebay, and garage sales finding quality stuff for DIRT CHEAP, washing it, and re-selling it for a tiny markup. They've got a little store in a older section of town. It's adorable. Working closely with a rescue, they get decent publicity.
People can make money in all sorts of creative ways on used stuff. My dad knows a guy who makes a killing on hubcaps. He knows where all the *good* potholes are, and he goes regularly to scavenge. He bangs out any dings, polishes them up and sells them. People will pay for them, especialy people with older cars who only need one or two.
Since you know so much about dogs, what works and what doesn't, I bet you would do well with this, Betty. You could even start out with just a flea market or swap meet table and an Ebay store. No need to rent a space untill you are sure the idea will fly in your area.
