Lauren, it's the 42 inch size.
I traded in my small sedan for a Scion xB, as it fits a dog crate perfectly, almost flat, and the price was right. Essentially, I bought a car for my dog.

I hope a soft crate would protect the dog in a crash, but I doubt it. I've thought of an airline type crate, but I don't think they provide enough ventilation. (Tell me if I'm wrong)
If there is a way to secure the soft crate, that would be helpful... anything to keep the crate and dog from becoming a projectile in the car.
It's bungeed, and attached to a heavy wooden platform that I use to elevate the crate so I can see out the rear through the crate mesh. An added bonus is that hair stays in the crate and my windows are slobber-free.

Let's put it this way. I adopted Ripley in January, paid off my car in February, and had a new car in March.
I'm not known for wise financial decisions.

SUmmer in Texas it gets VERY hot. Solution: 2nd set of keys. Leave AC on while you run in to eat, get groceries etc. Car's locked, dog is comfortable, problem solved.
We take our dogs camping with us, which necessitates us stopping and leaving the dog in the car while we buy groceries, eat on the way, sightsee, etc. As my brother has proved MANY times on the beach @ Lake Travis -- you can leave a car running all night long with the AC on and nothing happens. I don't worry.

Here someone would smash the window and take the car with your nice cool dog in it.

Lawsuit or not.
They still have to answer " wth was your hand doing in a unoccupied strangers car!?" "Just what was the over whelming reason you felt the need to put your hand into the car? Why are you putting your hand into what fundamentally and legally is the same thing as entering my house? What was is the reasoning behind it?"

Randy, I hear you, and I agree 100%. BUT - then you hear about these folks who get electrocuted while trying to break into a building and are able to collect off a law suit, or the moron who fell through a skylight while trying to break/enter and also successfully sued, and this makes it hard to not want to err on the side of caution. Well, actually I would not WANT to err on that side; I'd prefer the moron to get his hand bitten off if he is breaking into my car while a hypothetical dog happended to be inside ( not to be confused with idiot parents lifting their child up to pet said dog....)

My dog is calm in a parked car to passersby, he will give a warning bark to anyone who knocks on the window, god help anyone who sticks their hand in the car. I have 4 beware of dog signs in the car (one in each side window that's cracked) with my cellphone number on there (since i've have issues with people calling the police for my dog dying of heatstroke in 40 degree weather >_> yeaaaaah)...the police actually gave me the idea about putting my number on the signs during one of these calls and assured me that with the signs up I'd have a good defense if someone was stupid enough to stick a hand in there....you can't NOT see the signs
My parents' dog is VERY human friendly, even she has given warning tooth contact to some crazy lady who stuck her hand in my father's car...there is nothing wrong with your dog...there's something wrong with the idiots sticking their hands in cars....

We all hear of some idiotic law suit that makes it through the first tier before being over turned. I even heard of one that reportedly won the first round against John Hopkins for destroying the patients esp ability during a brain surgery she needed.
More often then not though one hears of righteous causes being overturned causing huge miscarriages of justice. Such as the one just overturned and nullified by the Supreme court last week.
For a child, I'd certainly feel sorrow and empathy for, but the supposed adult that put them in that position will have to take the responsibility for the outcome. Not me.
