No classes sooner they are booked and I already am fully paid for the in home stuff. That starts next Tuesday. I will bring up some of the issues. Hell I might even show him this thread. Hopefully he will chime in
Dogs going doggy...haven't really seen this except with very undersocialized, somewhat 'feral' pups (or actual feral pups). I understand these are different sports but I've seen up to 20 free running sled dogs focus on the person, not the other dogs. Prime example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qFP28ANXLLA . I never get tired of this one, it's the ideal I strive for with my dogs while loose running. Spend enough one on one time with a dog, especially as a pup, and 'going doggy' is (in my experience) not a concern. Particularly with a malinois or a dog bred to work with you. Bonding is #1, everything after that feeds off and builds upon that bond. Caveat: I have no experience with PPD/shutzhund/or ring sports.
I sincerely hope this works out for you and Gambit, Nick. Not only would I have never paid in full for services PRIOR to receiving them, as a professional (different field) I would never ask my clients to pay in full prior to my completing ANY work for them...
From my perspective, a down payment to cover the first lesson or two and then payments weekly after services provided would have been more appropriate, but it is too late at this point.
I see this pre paid package often. You can pay weekly or pre pay at a lower price.
I do offer pre paid package or pay as you go for my riding lessons facility.
I understand the pre-paid offer scenario, but since this trainer is new in the life of Heather and Nick, and they are new owners of a puppy, it might have been prudent to pay a slightly higher price weekly to make sure everyone gets along, etc... jmho. If this were someone I knew and had worked with, etc... I would certainly feel differently.

Pre pay or purchasing a group of lessons type thing is not that unusual. I've never attended a group ob class where I was given the option of paying as I go along.

Could of sworn I typed more. I must be losing my mind.
Nick and Heather you may want to start that notebook type thing for training.
Two of you sit down and write down questions you want to ask the trainer about the type of training and what the immediate goals should be.
Every training session should start off with a plan. Plans often change depending on what the dog shows that day which is why after training you and the trainer need to talk about what you accomplished that day, what homework you have, and what you are going to work on next week.
And plans can be very simple. Pups sitting for food.
Most importantly remember that you are the advocate for your dog and he relies on you to protect and nourish him and help him grow into everything he can be.
And sometimes that does include saying no to a trainer.
Trust me as I type, I regret very few things in my life but up there in the top 10 is the day I did not walk off the field with my dog.

Worse thing Kelly is my gut kept telling me no and I didn't listen.
Fortunately the dog in question is a strong dog mentally and has forgiven me. We pulled him out of training totally for a year and just started back at square 1 with happy ob.
