See how simple it all is when Bob explains it?
My recall training is based a whole bunch on Words from Bob.
I would like a copy, please, and thank you!!!

Connie, you have to remember that old folks like me that sit back and talk a good talk doesn't mean I can actually do it.
Some folk believe you need to post moving pictures, even talkies, in order to prove your worth.
I heard that somewhere.
Talkies?!
No, silent film is fine.
With piano music and subtitles.
And speaking of "titles" ..... I think a few zillion titles speak louder than words.

I agree 100% with Faisal on the down in motion. The down in motion, to me is my 'ace in the hole'. I will sometimes send my dogs to chase the geese off the field & then down them while in chase or recall them. I practice both often.
I also make it a rule to NEVER take my dogs off my property without an e-collar on as back up. I have rarely had to use it in the 7 years that I have used one....but it is nice to have it there just in case. I work my dogs out on public fields daily & often multiple times a day. I want the odds in my favor, too many crazy things can happen in addition to alot of stupid dog owners with loose out of contold dogs to not have one of us in total control.

I think the down in motion is an excellent tool in the box. My dogs can be downed be it on a send out or 6 inches behind a deer, bunny etc. "However", nothing in my books can take the place of a solid recall.
If my dog can do nothing else I want it to come when called.
JMHO of course!

When I ended up losing a lot of speed on my recall with all the “downing” I was doing I let the moving down take a back seat for a while. In fact, I was kind of scared to reintroduce it because his recall came back so good.
Then Bob posted this information and I read every word in anticipation of the next. It’s exactly the information I needed.
Where he says “STOP THAT”!, he might as well have wacked me with a 2x4. It really hit home. Maybe it can help and save Bob some typing time.
See Connie's proper Link below
I’m not very good at posting these threads but it’s about ½ way down on the second page.

I'm working on the moving Down right now with Jethro because he is so deaf when he goes over threshold. If I can catch him, I can get him into a Down and start dropping treats between his paws to keep him busy. I'm working on recall with him, but for now, I just want his belly on the ground when the chips are down.
My new criteria for a successful walk is - no injuries. We are gaining some ground now, and after an awful mid-week of reactivity, have had a few walks without any major reactions. It might help that we are walking down alleys and choosing times when everyone else has gone indoors.
Its interesting, since I put up the fence I am having a chance to work on calling Jethro off when he is barking. The hunting whistle really helps with this. I'm having better luck then I expected. But I hate the thought of losing his recall, so I'm very careful about when and where I use it.
I guess the most important thing is that he knows that when I call him, there is nowhere to go but to me. Honestly, he is pretty much on a leash whenever he is not in his crate, so I can always pick him up when I need to.

I can say (honestly) that I am consistent when I train, but that I have become complacent in my training. The two things I did right the other day was stop calling him when I realized he blew me off, knowing the more I said come when he was running away, the more I was training that it had no meaning, and secondly, I was very happy with him and had a mini party when he drug his tired butt and lolling tongue back to me... THAT I knew! I was only annoyed at myself - not the beast. Thanks for the input and feedback everyone...I look forward to getting my butt back in gear and getting serious again with consistently reinforcing and working with Falcon instead of just enjoying the big lug.

Seems like the recall is a good thing to back up with, to reinforce, to give some thought to, doesn't it. "Complacent" is a perfect word.
I want my dogs to fly to me (delighted!) when they hear me call.
Seems worth every effort.
Good reminder!
