I use blankets and then cut in half that have minimal purchase value (Dollar Store/Walmart $4) and cut them in half to use in the crate(s). They wash up great and if/when the dog(s) chew them up; my investment of replacement is very minimal.
Tried to edit after posting but couldn't. I don't mean to again state I cut the blanket once again..cat jumped on my desk and sent the coffee cup flying
I've heard of using rubber mats for chewers, but luckily Auster doesn't chew her bed while it is in the crate. Take it out to wash it and you have to keep it away from her, but in the crate it is fine  .

I stopped crateing my dog at 9 months, because I didn't want that large crate in my bedroom anymore (took up too much room). Instead, I use a baby gate to keep him in the bedroom with me at night (when I don't he eats the hall carpet), during the day if I'm not home, he is outside. I sometimes leave him in the bedroom with shut door if I'm only going out for a short while. I put baby locks on all the cubboads and unplug all elec cords while gone. He is 15 months and I still don't and will not trust him with full run of the house. He is still to much of a goof balls.
