I am so very sorry that the euthanasia went badly, sometimes it does, especially in the very old or the very fearful. It's awful to watch, but know it is just a phase passed thru on the way to deep anaesthesia, conciousness is gone when howling and gasping begin. Barbiturates sometimes do this, we don't know why.

I had one react similarly. It was obvious to me from her eyes that she was no longer in there when that reaction happened. It was her body reacting.
But the important thing is that you did what needed to be done for the dog.
I've said this before and I know I will say it again, because it has shaped my POV about end-stage disease and quality of life: I have waited too long before. I feel guilty about that, and I probably always will. I am never ever going to second-guess myself about whether I might have acted a little prematurely, though.
This to me is what true empathy is: making the decision with no regard for my own anguish, considering only the dog's needs.
This is what a loving, caring pack leader does, IMHO.

As horrible as it is I have never regretted making the decision to early, I have regretted with all my heart waiting too late.

I have to say the vet was fantastic, she and the nurse stayed with us the whole time and explained everything as it happened, and she gave us both a big hug as we left, we have always had a geat relationship with our vet with all our dogs, I consider ourselves very fortunate as I know some of our friends have not had such genuine and sympathetic relationships as ours, and I made a point of sending them a card to thank them, not all vets are hardened to the euthanazing or the reactions they get from the clients, and I wanted them to know that.

My father most certainly left it WAY too late with 2 of our ancient Boxers, I can still remember the anguish in both the dogs eyes as they succumbed to end stage cancer, he just couldn't bare to let them go, and I got him to admit that finally in his 80th year, I know he regrets it, but more sad than that from my point is, he didn't stay with them at the end, that I have never come to terms with; I don't want add to his guilt at his time of life, because he does mention it, and often, I don't need to add to the guilt because he will take it to his grave with him.
We all are morally obliged to give our dogs a happy life, and as peaceful death as possible.

I do not believe an owner should feel that they have to stay as a dog is euthanized. For some people, it is really just too much.

"Death wasn't easy, but for Harry it it was the only relief from a life that becoming filled with more and more torment by the day. Jamie took that torment on himself so his friend could have peace".
That sums it up perfectly for me, that is what he has done, unwittingly, but yes, thats it, you nailed it Mara.

I do take your point Betty, and I totally understand why some people can't do it - it can be brutal and is a picture your mind cannot erase, but Rocky and Jody were so old and spent every minute with my Dad, they were devoted to him, and purely from my point of view was it was the least he could do, but he simply could not bare the final few minutes, I just wish someone along side the vet had been with them, I was forbidden to go with them, I was deigned too young and he saw it as unsuitable for me to be there, as I have got to be an adult, I wish I had had the courage to face my dad down and be with them.
