My Kira has a tendency to get a little tube shape to her, even though she is raw fed. She's just a tough dog to balance because she really doesn't NEED much food, but she's very active and gets very hungry.

Tube shape is better than the dreaded pickle shape!

My late Missy dog was almost the same weight her entire life. She bounced between about 36.5# (a tad too skinny) and 42# (starting to feel chubby) and was never outside of that range in 9 years. 38-39# was perfect for her.
When I first got her she was fed average mass market food (purina, pedigree, etc) I gradually worked my way up to better and better food, eventually ending up with raw.
I honestly never saw any difference in drive, focus, energy level etc. Maybe it would have been different if I had kept her on junk food her whole life instead of getting gradually better and better with her food (ie, she would have aged faster). But who knows.
I'm all for feeding your dog the best possible diet you can, but I've seen plenty of dogs that are fed substandard foods (IMO at least)and are doing pretty darn good.
My parents feed 3 of their dogs kibble and 1 dog raw. All the kibble fed dogs are at an excellent weight. My mom is very careful to keep their weights down due to joint issues. Ali can actually tend towards too skinny but because of his hip dysplaysia that's the better direction for him to go. They're fed the appropriate amount of food plus canned veggies(green beans mostly) to fill them up. They also get sweet potatoes or pumpkin instead of veggies about 3 nights a week.
Candy, a Boston Terrier, was grossly overweight and kibble fed when first taken from my Grandma's care. She looked like a sausage with legs and would breathe so hard while playing we thought she would have a heart attack. She is now approaching her ideal weight. She is the prepackaged raw fed dog of the bunch. She has a massive under bite and wet food gave her horrible room-clearing gas.
I think the owner monitoring the weight has a lot more to do with it than exactly what they're fed.
