I guess after a tick reaches the adult stage, it doesn't "do" much, except go up on low vegetation waiting for a host to come by. If no opportunity to feed presents itself, it goes "home" to the leaf litter, remains in suspended animation nearly forever until an opportunity to complete the life cycle occurs. Ticks have some "glycol" antifreeze type compounds which prevent them from freezing.
They are susceptible to dessication, to drying up. They avoid the sun.
They transmit 20+ diseases. The reason doctors and vets don't just give doxycycline for every tick bite without testing is because the nation RAN OUT of doxycycline last year. It is only manufactured by one place. And tetracycline which works just as well isn't even being made.

just back from a vet conference. The tick talks were amazing.
Sounds like nothing works . Amitraz has "anti-feeding" properties, but isn't much of a repellant. The collars don't work if wet. Frontline+ works for 2 wks. Ticks we see= 0.000046% of the ticks in the environment.
Ticks do something called "questing"= they anchor themselves on bushes< 3ft high and hang on with their hind legs, wave their front arms about and wait for you to come by. If you don't they go back down into the leaf litter and huddle up, can do that over and over for 20 years. They said during times of high tick activity you should go out to damp places within 2 ft of bushes and just look, let your eyes adjust, and you can see them. Lots of them on the tips of grass and weeds.
Icky- poo-poo!!!
Last year the USA ran OUT of doxycycline.
This thread was fascinating. And awful.

There is good news -
http://healingtreenaturals.com/shop/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=90
http://www.amazon.com/Vets-Best-Natural-Flea-Spray/dp/B003PRI6OC
Both of these not only repel ticks, fleas, wasps, hornets, yellow jackets, bumble bees, honey bees, horse flies, and mosquitoes, they KILL flying insects if the insect comes into direct contact with the solution.
I've used Vet's Best to destroy hornet nests and to 'treat' the wood red wasps were chewing to build nests. After soaking the wood on my porch with it, they never came back. Even after it rained.
I found out that they repel horse flies very effectively by accident. I had to dog walk two poodles past a bush that this fly obviously called home. It's as if he waited for me every day. He got a few good bites in... until one day I sprayed myself with the Go 'Way and he came up, sniffed, and made a bee-line back to his bush. I even sprayed the poor dogs, since he figured out he could turn his attention to them.

I second that!, totally agree with you Bob! Last year, we had such a problem with chiggers. You can't see them, but the itching that ensues from the bites are just miserable. The tiny welts stayed on my skin for a long while and like I said, the itching is just fierce. Way worse than any mosquito bite I have ever had.
I use Wondercide on my lawn. It works for about a month, and then you need to do another application.
I have found that if you soak the grass heavily with the water/ Wondercide from the sprayer, it does a better job of killing the little buggers.

I ordered the Shoo Tag from LB. Any ideas on if it actually works? Already pulled a tick of the dog.
Next step will be an ecapsulated haz mat suit for all of us!
