Sounds like this is a fabulous old dog. Some of those big old labs are just great.

Sounds like this is a fabulous old dog. Some of those big old labs are just great.
And I can't say enough about this:
"When we first got him, he smelled bad and his eyes were kind of glassy. We suspect he was fed low-quality kibble for a long time and that's why his digestive system is so weak and prone to diharrea now. My parents started feeding him raw and over the course of the next few months, his stinkiness and glassy eyes went away. He recently had a full blood workup and they said he's very healthy - blood panels looked like a young dog."
BTW, has he ever had a seizure that you know of?

Things like internal bleeding can cause some of these same symptoms, the pacing and pain.
This dog is old enough for things like splenic masses etc.
A 100 lb dog is hard to examine, palpation of the internal organs impossible.
Wishing for the best outcome --keeping fingers crossed.
Me too.

Hi Connie - no seizures that we know of.
He was doing great tonight: had a good walk, ate his dinner well, seems back to normal. Later when I was over visiting, he came into the room and seemed upset, panting, anxious. My mom turned the florescent lights off in the kitchen (next room over, which he had to walk through to come into the room where we were). He immediately stopped panting and went back into the bedroom and went to bed.
He's always been sensitive to sounds - fireworks, thunder, etc terrify and panic him. And we have very few photos of him because he doesn't like the flash and seems to think that you'll always use it. We're not sure what's up with his new light phobia though. This is new, but at the same time, I think they said he was fine on his walk out in the daylight so it's more from the florescent lights than light itself.

Some dogs exhibit dementia symptoms as they age. Restlessness, especially at night, can be part of it..
Look it up on the internet, this is a relatively recently recognized pattern of behavior, something equivalent to what nursing home caregivers call "sundowning", where elderly patients become confused and agitated around nightfall or soon after.
Your guy might not be nervous about lights themselves, it may be the action of shutting off the lights and everyone sitting down that is comforting to him--as in "nothing is happening, we aren't going anywhere, it's time for bed".

He seems to be doing much better today. I'll post again if we find out anything interesting from his neurologist on Monday (Shiloh's due for a checkup with him anyway).
His main thing right now is that he still seems to be gassy, and we're not sure what to do about it if he shouldn't have gas pills with his raw food.

Betty~
What you wrote about " sundowning" is something I know a lot about, which I will not get into here.
I just wanted to add, "vascular dementia" is another dementia that can cause this.
Maybe Shiloh's heart and vascular system should be checked for blockages etc? If they do that for dogs?
Just a thought.....

What are the pills, exactly?
Meds for gas don't necessarily contain antacids. Maybe it's just simethicone.

Simethicone's not an antacid? I'll check tonight but I think the pills they have are herbal anyway.

Simethicone's not an antacid?
No.
In kind of simplified terms, what it does is gather up gas bubbles. It's difficult and time-consuming for the body to expel scattered small bubbles, which still cause discomfort, even scattered; they still take up the room they would take up when they become more cohesive.
Simethicone (preferably liquid, and generally advised by the health professional to take with water) gathers together those bubbles so there's a "clump" of them to grip and expel (by burping or farting).
It doesn't somehow "dissolve" the gas or keep it from forming ..... it makes the gas much easier to expel (from either end, depending on where the bubbles are).
An antacid, OTOH, works to neutralize stomach acid.
Sometimes they are combined in one product. But they are and do very different things.
