I don't expect a dog that wants to kill small furry things to live peacefully with birds, ferrets, and rats. I don't want the headache of worrying constantly.

The Papillons are cute, but I don't know if I could resist naming mine Gizmo.
The Min Pin is a great dog for agility. From what I've seen, the modern versions are pretty much far removed from working vermin dogs.
Sam, FWIW, regardless of its heredity, almost any small dog will have a drive to pursue and/or kill smaller animals. Whatever you get, I wouldn't trust that any small dog would coexist with other pets or birds. I've seen larger, more stable breeds socialized to accept hamsters and parakeets, but never a small breed. I would not allow any of my dogs to interact with any animal smaller than a cat.

I don't allow any cats or dogs to interact with 'prey' animals, either, but I've seen smaller terriers go into drive and literally rip apart a metal rat cage to kill the rat (we found the aftermath). I've also seen pictures of a schnauzer bloody in the face and front legs because he cut himself up badly trying to go after someone's chickens that he'd been raised with.
I've also had peaceful cohabitation with pit bulls and cats/mice/ferrets/birds/rabbits.
I don't want to come home and find my dog has seriously injured himself AND killed my other pets because he was too tenacious to stop once he got the idea in his head. Sure, it's a matter of keeping everyone safe, but failures do happen. I can't tell you how many times I've come home and found a dog out of his/her kennel... magically! As if they grew thumbs!

My airedales would pick up critters, woodchucks, raccoons if given the chance, shake and drop, barely moving a hair. My border terrier trains easily if food is present. Italian greyhounds are easy to keep, clean but seem more like a cat, independent, when it comes to training.

Cheryl, your using bribes to train the dog. That doesn't have to happen.
It's no different weaning a dog off of treats in training as it is weaning them off of corrections in correction training.

Samantha, lots of good suggestions for you! Personally, given your desire to compete in performance events, I'd probably choose between a Papillon, MinPin, TFT, and a Manchester Terrier (jmo).
Yep, mostly terriers there LOL. I think I must be a glutton for punishment because I do love the little monsters.
I used to come home often to find my collie mysteriously out of his airline crate. Couldn't figure it out until I finally caught the cockatoo I had opening the crate for him. I knew that bird could open his cage if I didn't have every possible place (door and food dishes) padlocked (he even figured out the concept of opening the lock) but the crate was a surprise.

There's a few Papillon breeders around me that I've contacted. Also some corgi breeders, but I didn't notice any cattle dog breeders that I thought were legit.
There aren't many Papillon and corgi dogs in rescue around me. It may change when I'm actually in the spot to get another dog, but I thought it was a good sign (no over breeding in this area at least).
I'll have to warm up to mini pins. The ones I've met were nasty, stupid little dogs and I hated them.

I love my min pins, but they are not good for first time owner. They need experienced owners because they are high energy little dogs.
I wouldn't recommend a min pin. They are prone to knee injuries and both of my min pins had knee surgeries. They could outsmart their owners too. They need clothes in the winter and love to baking hot in the sun. They could be excellent problem solvers. They are prone to aggression easily so they need lots of socializtion. Need lots of throw blankets around the house so they can snuggle with it.
If this OP is interested in Min pin, I would suggest german pinscher. Both breeds are the same, but it seems like german pinscher has less health iessues compare to min pins especially with knees.

My border is a puppy ,7 months and still learning, she is very food motivated. Thought a BT might be a choice for a small dog because mine is easy to train with food.

Might want to a consider Brussels Griffon if you are looking for a really small dog (10 lbs or so).
Spunky, very very smart, lots of attitude and personality. Never had one but if I wanted a tiny dog I would be very tempted by them, I was impressed by the couple that I have met.
