Hmm.. I just reread the 2 treat method.
I didn't get it quite right. I opened his mouth and "pilled" him, then gave him a piece of steak, instead of trying to get him to eat a pill treat, then the reward one.
However, I think I can get him comfortable with it and use the steak as a reward. That way I can get it over with.

I think the biggest problem now is the Panacur powder if he doesn't clean his bowl. I've got 10 more days of this..UGH!
Maybe add some flavored water or fish juice to convince him to lick the bowl clean? I always moisten my Boxers food to help prevent bloat. The first time I open a new can of salmon all the juice gets poured into the dish. Tanner spends a few minutes very carefully licking every last bit out. I'll also give him soup base/bouillon dissolved in some hot water and get almost the same reaction. Since you already have steak you could just boil a piece in some water to get the same thing without all the salt.

Samantha~ I don't care if he pouts.
But it's not that simple.
If he refuses to eat his dinner, how will I give him the powdered Panacur and be sure he has food in his stomach to combat the nausea from the antibiotic?
Easily solved. Feed him his normal dinner, mix the powder into some baby food you've liquified with some broth or water, and offer it to him. If he won't eat it, put it in a syringe and make him eat it.

I got some big syringes from the vet. But before I do that and create a situation that will be forever difficult, I will try to make it acceptable so that it is easy on him and me.
So far, the treat after the placement of the pill is working. We'll see.

Carol, so are you pilling him then treating him?
I was suggesting you give him a treat with the pill in it, then have another treat ready to go to give to him almost right after the treat with the pill in it.
For Tucker it totally takes his mind off what he has in his mouth and thinking about what I have in my hand. Before he used to mouth around the treat then one second later...plop...he would spit the pill out. But if i have another treat ready to go he automatically swallows what he has in his mouth to get ready for the next one..lol
Don't complain....TRAIN!!! |

Yes... I always give the pill wrapped in a treat, then wave the 2nd higher value food treat in front of their eyes/nose and act all crazy. That way they gulp down whatever is in their mouth because they are all amped up to get that great treat right in front of them!

Thanks Wendy and Lee~
I finally got it!!
The problem is now, the treats are as large as I can make them because his appetite is WAY OFF!! Presumably, from the clavamox. My last shepherd was the same.
So he is only eating 1 meal a day. I'm throwing out food like crazy! He pretty much eats dinner, so I can get the Panacur into that meal. Only 1 more day of that, but 1 more week of antibiotics..ugh...poor guy.
He's on the skinny side to begin with I can't imagine how much weight he's losing.
I know he's not feeling well. He still wants to play, but didn't want to go for a walk this morning. I just let him rest.

I'm glad he's almost done with the Panacur. Those antibiotics can cause loss of appetite for sure. I have been lucky enough that my dogs who have needed them were suckers for boiled chicken and rice. Probably because it was a special meal they only got once in a blue moon when they were ill, so they scarfed it down regardless of appetite.
I hope he feels better soon!

Thanks Lee~
I told my vet about the appetite. He told me to stop the Clavamox until Thursday and then let him know how his appetite is.
Today he is eating normally again so now we know it was the Clavamox.
There had been so much bacteria in his stool, that the doc put him on Flagyl + Clavamox + Panacur + Fortiflora.
He still has 1 more week of Clavamox + Flagyl to go... but instead of the Clavamox, he might get Tylosin instead.
The blood work ($800.00!!) came back normal.
I'll be glad when it is back to "normal".

We just finished a round of Flagyl....YUCK!!! That stuff is SUPER bitter.
Lee's trick worked for us.
First, I gave a small meatball, then the pilled meatball, then another regular meatball. She just got into gobble mode and never noticed the second one was loaded.
We put her panacur in some THK, she had no clue it was there.
Wishing your guy a speedy recovery
