My dog's a digger too...he has a few craters for laying in when he is too hot. I just don't do anything about it...but filling the holes with poop works accept the dog will dig elsewhere. Like Betty said, give her an appropriate dig spot.
A tired dog is a good dog, a trained dog is a better dog.
Similar to Cheri's answer, I've stopped a digger by filling the holes with their own crap. They WILL dig in another spot but will give up after a while.
As per Betty''s suggestion I've also heard that having their own digging spot can work.
Build a sand box and bury the dog's toys in it..Then get a metal detector and get serious abut digging up the yard for yourself. Sounds like you've got a great spot for it.

Sounds like there has been some pretty good advice tossed out there for breaking the digging cycle or giving the dog a designated place to satisfy its desires to dig. Nothing I can add there.
That said, like Bob indicated, I want to hear more about what else you find buried in your yard. Time for YOU to start digging.
I used to put my dogs poop in the holes they dug and it worked. They do not dig in the areas that they used to. I allow them to dig for gophers, but they no longer dig any other time. With one particular dog I had I would put mouse traps right under the surface of the loose earth. Problem was this was a 130 lb GSDxDane and all he did when he snapped a trap was shake it off and keep digging.
I was tempted to use rat traps but I also had a 9lb terrierxPoodle at the times so that wouldn't go well at all.
This was the first dog I had a digging issue with and the crap in the hole worked well.
My past JRT was an avid digger but he was also a great mole catcher so I let him dig.
I had two Border terriers that tried to dig up a Kerry Blue I buried in the flower garden....but that's another story.
