After a recent pit bull attack, a neighboring community banned PBs. Then they figured out that citizens would pay a licensing fee to own "dangerous breeds". Now you can pay $250 to keep a dog that would otherwise allegedly be deemed a threat. What, the dog is too dangerous for society, but if you pay us off...?
Recently, we had a discussion about licensing service dogs. The idea was poo-pooed because it would be impractical to enforce, yet we are willing to go to these measures to keep a particular breed?

I can see where you're coming from but I don't think a "dangerous dog course" would fly, the dangerous breeds that were owned by nefarious people have these dogs for what I used to term "surrogate testicles". But the reality is if these dogs are spayed and neutered ( before adoption) the nefarious people have no interest in them, they want intact dogs to breed to make money off of, and they are not doing it for the betterment of the breed. imo, and coming from my ac background it would be better to require personal liability insurance of five million to be carried, on each dog. There should be mandatory spay/neuter requirements (unless the dog is ato be shown) because as soon as you bring that into the equation the nefarious types NO longer have any interest in the dog. They should be required to be microchipped and that number recorded along with licensing info.
In my time doing animal control we had 3 major bites that made the national news, in my time doing ac, where the vast majority of dogs were pits or pit mixes, dealing with hundreds on complaints, strays, bite investigations, hbc's, surrenders, abuse, there are only four pit I ever recommended be pts for temperment.
One of the local humane agencies used to automatically pts any pits, they now adopt very carefully selected dogs out.
A local community was enacting bsl, after public outcry they enacted dangerous dog legislation instead.
I have a friend with two cgc pits, she has been able to change attitudes of people who meet her dogs on the street.
It all starts with responsible dog ownership, and again becoming an ambassador for your breed of choice, is it hard to find an apt or rental with certain breeds, you betcha, is it impossible, no. Heck, I've called on rentals that said no pets allowed and had landlords give me and my gsd the place, it all depends on how you present yourself. jmo ( which seems to have turned into a rant).
My animals are not "like" family, they ARE family. |

Funny how that works, eh?
I may be wrong but if your dog is a service dog, or you are a service dog trainer then I believe you can get by this ban because it's a violation of the ADA. The interesting thing is that per the ADA there is no certifyning entity therefore if someone asks for proof of your dog being a SD, or you being a SD trainer, there is no way to prove it. If you are bullied by the HOA just sic the ADA on them. I don't think the HOA would like that phone call.

A few years ago when we put in the outdoor wood stove, Paul went looking for different home owners insurance to see if he could get it cheaper somewhere else. He talked to several insurance companies that showed him the door as soon as he said he has a German Shepherd. Even when he told them that the GSD in question was Drift who is a CGC and Certified Therapy Dog with TDI. They didn't care... they would not insure us if we kept the GSD. They never blinked an eye at the two Malinois or the horses, but GSD is on their black list.
We ended up going with a private insurance carrier that believes that BSL is a load of crap There are a few insurances out there that don't have "black lists" for dogs, I think State Farm is one but I'm not sure.

Having a CGC and TDI cert doesn't hold the same weight as a service dog. Now that the feds have thrown their hat in the ring as far as the SD goes you'll see that SD owners enjoy more protection under the law. I'm not suggesting that people abuse the vague SD requirements but I do find it perplexing that insurance companies will discount the CGC certs. At least the owners can prove the dogs temperment. Don't feel too bad. My insurance company gave me grief over my GSD patrol dog but backed off when told that the PD covers anything the dog may do at work, or at home. I guess it's easier to have a sweeping ban of certain breeds instead of making sure those dogs are good (or bad) to determine if a person can be covered.

Man. Spay + Neu. Is a whole nother topic. :P
I agree with.
This is ALL my personal experience... but, being a 23 yr old living in the most "ghetto" of "ghetto" places.
I see these altered and unaltered dogs still being owned by the punks..
They are off fighting constantly, running off lead ECT. Ive been bit 3 times by these dogs owned by YOUNGER people.
Fixed or not, they still get them, bloat about head size, and how they have attacked this person or that animal, how "tapped" they are ECT.
I don't see older people here doing any of that. And yes, i have met plenty of the older people with them, i have yet to hear one bloat about how she or he lets them out at people, how they have bitten people, or how big the head is.
So yeah, from my point of veiw, it IS the younger people making most of the trouble. And no, if they had to pay a coupld hun bucks 4 the dog, they wouldnt. They usually kill them at home, ignore or neglect them, or give them away when it comes to basic vet needs for injuries.
Im sooooo tired. I can barely see. -.- please excuse any typing errors.

@Kelly;
I have State Farm. They treat ALL dogs as a liability, regardless of breed. When I got my GSD, I called to let them know. They told me that my insurance would not change, as I already had listed my previous dog, who was a 35# hound mix. My agent told me that they settle all dog bite claims asap, regardless of any details or circumstances.
They also told me that posting warning signs was irrelevant.
