If she is just one year old, that is likely why she is shedding so much. She is loosing the soft puppy undercoat and developing her adult coat.
A female dog looses coat after whelping her puppies too, and after coming into heat, sometimes.
The TV dog star "Lassie" supposedly a female, was actually a male. I read someplace that a male collie's coat was much more predictable, stayed the same over the course of years, better for filming.
Of course that might not be true!
Also because the male Collie's ruff, mane, etc is thicker and more....collie like then the females.
