It's less being distracted by things around her than every single ingrained instinct telling her that she must possess and kill the ball and if she brings it to me and I take it she won't eat....
It's hardcore primitive prey drive, so we're using lung chips as reward. She hunts, chases, and catches the ball, then if she gives it to me she can trade it for something that tastes better than a toy and eat her prey of dehydrated lung. She's just not comfortable getting it right to me, she'd rather trade at a 2ft distance. The next step is going to mark her poking me with the ball THEN trading for it by dropping it and going to the reward.
Tanner is loving the game with the hockey puck. I slide it at him and he gets a paw on it. He'll keep going if I don't grab the puck. Time to teach him to stay at the end of the hallway so I can slide it at him. I'm going to teach him that the end of the hall is "goal" by marking with an elevated bar(bar faded to tape later?) so it's going to be a boundary stay that he has to do something in. He's never done anything like that so we'll see how it goes.

Kasey is slowing coming along with trying to ignore goldfish crackers being held all around his nose. I found a good video on youtube that broke the trick down into small steps and it seems to be working fairly well so far. I definitely have to make sure we don't practice before dinner when he's hungry though - I could lose a finger...
We only have one more week as of Sunday, right? Not sure that goldfish will be sitting on his nose by then!!

I've been putting my finger in Trooper's mouth along with the hot dog. Ellis method of holding the muzzle.
The teeth marks in my finger aren't near as deep now.
He still isn't actually taking the hot dog from my hand yet.
He's never been gentle when it comes to taking treats from my hand and now I think it's a bit of stress for him when he feels my finger in his mouth.
He desperately wants to spit it out when he makes contact with my finger. I think my "OUCH" freaked him out the first time or two. It wasn't done for effect either.
Just through daily "conversation" Thunder knows the difference between his Kong and food dish.
I just say Kong and he looks for it.
His food bowl is often in the dog house or near where he lays in the sun all day.
I say bowl and he goes gets it.
Really easy with important items. With outher items it would just be a matter of adding importance to it, meaning marker training for the item.
His Kong and his bowl were just a natural progression because both lead to a reward of a meal or a game of fetch.
He's always had a natural retrieve. for competition it was just a matter of putting the formal bits to it.
forgot! He also knows what my car keys are simply because I've lost them twice and a simple "Find it" and he did because of human scent on them so I just added those to his fetch games.
