Pretty much the same Bob, our male ended up with horrendous mouth tumours, and our female had cancer in both rows of teats, uterine, which finally metastasised to her lungs.
Dad left it far too long to put them out of their misery I felt, I remember Jody coughing for far too long.
Cancer, cardiac issues, heat intolerance, joint issues(hip dysplasia), etc. They have most of the common brachycephalic issues and the large dog issues.
My parents have a 12 year old with a malignant tumor. Due to cardio myopathy they can't put him under to remove it. It's small so far but he's had regular lump removals his whole life.
They also had a Boxer who was one of those sad few that just aren't wired right. My parents worked with a solid behavioral approach for years with little results. Adding medication helped somewhat but her aggression was just so unpredictable that they ended up putting her to sleep. It killed them to have to do it. She was my mom's heart dog and she had just the most amazing personality.
There is one boxer out here at a schutzhund club. The highest drive bully breed dog i have ever seen. Absolutely incredible, however most seem to have far too many health issues to be a successful working dog. Just my opinion.
I would always be scared those dogs will always be fanging themselves in the bite work.
geez couldn't they select for tighter lips and a bit more muzzle length.
I imagine they could, but then it would be a GSD
I love Boxers, but I know what Cathy means, some are just wired up wrong, our male was one of them, my dad wept like a child when he had to be put to sleep.
Tracey I think there is enough variation within any breed to tweak phenotype and still be true to the breed, the show crowd have been doing for decades to produce extremes that are counter-productive to the dog's health.
a bit of tweaking to improve a dog is not the same thing.
seen what they have done to the wrinkles and jowls etc of the neo, those people should be arrested.
I could see a little longer muzzle length without losing breed type. In fact they mention it as a trait they value on one of the dogs so I assume they're breeding for it.
That's pretty tight jowled for Boxers though. You can see in the action shots that it doesn't seem to get in the way.
