I have a 12 week old Registered ACD. It's my 3rd one. Smartest most loyal dogs I've ever owned! But please do NOT get one if you live in an apartment or home with no land because these are very active working dogs bred to work all day without getting tired it's just not fair to such an active dog. They need a job to do . They're also very very smart dogs. Picks up training before I've finished thinking about it lol. They also have a very high bite drive - they were bred to bite the heels of wild cows in the outback - hence the name Heelers.

Yeah, it's back to square one on a pup but at least I'm not frantically trying to find a place that will rent to my "German Shepherd mix".
I forget that other people might not have ever heard of these breeds.
I think I'm going back to an easily trainable breed with some drive but there's so much variation in temperaments among those breeds that I can't even attempt to find a pup long distance. I wouldn't mind a Poodle but some lines are just plain nasty as far as health and temperament goes. A hunting test bred lab would also be fun and are very versatile. I've been looking at Australian Cattle Dogs as well but I've honestly never been around one for more than about 5 minutes. I really "click" with terriers well but I've never been around the more "herdey" personality dogs. I know I don't want a Border Collie or any of the more "sensitive" breeds.
Have you thought about a Border TERRIER, Cathy? Biddable, sensible, versatile, "business-like attitude toward work", not typically fighters, definitely NOT on anyone's list of Banned breeds either, and they're also quite HEALTHY

Glad to see you haven't given up on dogs completely. Sounds like you still want a larger breed along the same lines as a Mal?
You know, if you really had your heart set on getting a Malinois, you may want to consider getting a Tervuren or a Groenendael. If those rental offices are as clueless as it appears, they would never know it's practically the exact same dog as a Malinois and it might just look different enough from a "Shepherd" to fool them.

Brings in ANY Belgian or Dutch shepherd: "That's a GSD Mix -- They're BANNED"

Really sorry you can't get the pup you wanted
I had all that when I was forced to move after the divorce, and I still had Harry then, 5 dogs in a rental was never going to happen, frustrated the hell out of me, and I vowed if I ever win the Euro millions, I would buy a load of little houses with gardens, simply to rent to people with dogs, and NOT charge them through the nose for it, ah well, I can dream!
I know you will find your new wee friend soon, he is out there just waiting for you

sometimes these things are for the better. I didn't get the pup I paid a deposit for and incidentally joined this forum to get opinions about.
I did get my current gsd as a result and....wow, I could not imagine life without him.
I did see the pups I never got a year later, not doing well in crappy kennels for most of their life with crude crappy owners. I actually apologised to them (the pups I never got)and said it's not my fault, weird huh.

I would love a Border but I'm haven't been able to find one that's in either Missouri, Arizona, or on the route in between. I also can't afford $1500 for a pup plus $300+ in shipping. I have money saved back for vet visits, toys, etc. but I'm looking more for around $600 purchase price and able to pick up. Some breeders are down in that price range but they're harder to find.

Look up Tynside Border Terriers on the net. Just outside Kansas City Mo.
I haven't talked with Jane Worstell in a number of yrs but she has some excellent Borders.
She has put many, many different titles on most all her personal dogs.
Even a picture of my old war horse Rags in there.
At one point in time Rag's sire Rugby was the most titled Border terrier in the USA. All titles put there by Jane.
Look up Lizzy on the site. CD through UDX in less then 11 months.
old dogs LOVE to learn new tricks |
