This is the reason why I'm unsure about a prong and a dominant dog collar. I don't know if good DVDs, articles, books will be enough for me to learn it correctly. Even with the best intention we may harm our dogs if not being aware about our mistakes.

After all the advices I recieved and what I read in articles about it, I've dropped the idea of buying a Haltie. About Prong and Dominant Dog collar I'm still very much hesitating, as I have no professional within reach, who could co rrect me.

It takes a lot to actually harm a dog with the pinch or DD collar.
The Ellis DVDS are fantastic when it comes to the how, why and why on training.
The fact that your concerned about doing it right is a huge factor that will help you take your time to understand it.

Thanks Bob, this is very encouraging. I certainly will take my time to inform me well in order to overcome my preoccupations. One of Michael's DVDs I have already and also the one of Ed about aggresive and dominant dogs.
Do you think I'd need a pinch and DD for each of my dogs, both Pits and the Lab-Mix too? Charlie, the stray I guess will not need one.

Your the only one that can know for sure if all your dog's need it.
One of the reasons for the DD collar AND the pinch is because the pinch is known to open on it's own occasionally.
The DD collar gives that extra security if that happens.

Why then not the DD alone? Dooes it not have the same effect as the pinch?

the DD is a backup in case the prong becomes detached , as they sometimes do .
make sure the DD is slightly bigger than the prong , so when you are activating the prong it is the only thing working on the dog . the DD should remain loose , not contacting the dogs' neck .
and if it hasn't been said , both should sit up high on the dogs' neck .
hope that helps .

Ian, I like the DD collar to fit VERY high & snug, the same as a prong collar (neither one choking the dog, of course, but with no slack in either of the collars)...
So I bought 2 helpful items from this site to insure that when the PRONG is activated, the Dominant Dog collar is NOT activated, but remains as merely a back-up just in case the Prong accidentally comes apart:
http://leerburg.com/prongleashes.htm
Or if that page is Out of Order, then try them individually:
http://leerburg.com/twohandleprongcollarleash.htm
http://leerburg.com/prongcollarleashadapter.htm
I have the ("built-in") 2 handled leather Prong Leash for my male, and I have the ("attachable accessory") leather Leash Adapter for my female -- Both have TWO snaps, a longer one for the DD, and a shorter one for the PRONG ... This way, if the Prong must be activated for a Correction, the DD is NOT activated (but remains as merely a back-up in case the Prong accidentally pops OPEN) IMHO, if a DD collar is allowed to fit more loosely on the neck, then there is too much slack & not enough quick leverage to apply in the event that it would be needed (especially in the case of a shorter or older handler with less upper body strength, such as myself).

I look at the DD collar as more of a support collar for the pinch as mentioned above or a control collar for the truly dominant dog.
In that instance it can often take a strong person, both physically and mentally to use one properly.

You can also use a coupler with a few big knots in it to shorten one side of it or a big carabiner if ordering special tools is not possible.
