If I recall correctly, weren't the suzuki samurai's recalled/hammered by CR for rolling over all the time? Maybe he's just really smart for not wanting to get into the rolling death trap.

Dear Mr Williams,
I really hope that you do not let your dog ride in the back of your pick up without a crate or properly tethered. You did not mention that, one way or the other.
Dogs that are not properly secured is a certain accident waiting to happen. They get tossed around, and a quick stop could throw your dog over the side or out the back end. Resulting in the loss of your dog, and possable the cause of an accident.
I know most of the people in this forum could never imagine people actually transporting their dogs in that manner, but a lot of people do and think it is perfectly alright
I was very thankful that when I was in Florida, that a law was finally passed that it was illegal to trasport, dogs, or humans in the back of pick up trucks. However where I live in Missouri it is an every day practice, that still makes me shudder. Also the bed of a pick up truck in the summer is hot enough to blister your skin if it is in the sun for even a short while. It can be just as painful to your dog.
Sincerely Joyce M. Burrows
Blessings,
Joyce |

I think crates are a good thing even if the vehicle is closed in.The above that I mentioned had a canopy on his truck so no danger of dog falling out, however his boy still had to constantly brace his footing. After he used a crate his dog was able to lie down and not have to struggle for balance therefore able to relax.Anyway I am a little off topic,Hanky may be a wonderful driver making this not his dog's problem.

Whats with all the bribery and not letting the dog jump out of the truck.
"should we tip toe also while the dog sleeps."
1. identify the position to the dog
2. identify the release of the position
3. Repeat until you read the dog understands position.
4. correct the dog for no compliance and of course praise for a job well done.
5. This of course should all be done on leash without bribery
you said, he balks if you go near the truck
So then put the dog in a heel, if you have a heel command, then move closer to the truck.
If the dog balks, then correct him or motivate him to get into the heel position. This is not a behavior problem, it's a lack of direction problem.
I asked the question about a kennel because i wanted to know if you taught the dog to enter or exit the kennel on command. If you had then all you would need to do is project that learned behavior toward your truck. Then all you would need to do is praise your dog or correct him for compliance or lack of. Yes most people use kennels as a sleeping and house training aids, However we use them as directional tools.
as a note and if I read correctly, this dog is a year old yes?
Then he should have no problem jumping out of a truck anytime, anywhere
Jacob

Jacob, I'll bring my partner's Monster Truck over to your house give you an up command and demand you get in without no step bars or hand bars of any kind and see if you can do it.I hate mixing human examples with K9 but if this dog simply cannot make this jump into the truck through no fault of his own and you start demanding it of him you could do more harm than good. Please rule out any hip, elbow or plain not conditioned to jump, which he wouldn't be at such a young age before you start putting anymore negativity into such a simple thing.By what Hanky said this dog is doing when he gets to the truck it doesn't sound like he is being a punk it sounds like he really is scared of something.I believe firm but fair is the way to go.

Yes, "stress" or in a another form "fear" is a giving in this stiuation.
However, direction through the obedience will over ride the stress. Remember you should be gicing the directions not the dog.
But don't take my word for it, Throw a big "Raw" steak in the back of the little toyota truck and let the dog tell you if his hips hurt.

I've yet to see anyone FORCE a dog to jump and not end up having the dog crash and burn. Seen tons of fools try to force dogs over the jumps in training, and have yet to see one that a) cleared it without crashing due to the interference of the leash corrections and their own fear, and b)learned to LIKE jumping when that's the way they were taught. This isn't a dominance issue; it's fear. Force isn't the way to go.

Didn't call you a fool; called the schutzhund folks fools for trying to prong a dog over a jump. Can't call a fellow Bay Stater a fool, can only call him a yankee!
