we use dogloos also and i can't say enough good about them. you can clean them out and disinfect which is pretty hard to do with something wooden. dogs like them....immediately go inside to check it out. it protects them from the elements and by design, it is far less affected by wind than something with flat sides. one dog has chewed a little around the door, just roughing it up a bit, but not removing any material.
i do not recommend the use of any sort of thin, flat metal - such as flashing around a dog. even if they don't chew it (but probably would) they could hook it with their collar or the wind could catch an edge of it and peel it up. next thing you know, your dog is cut. go with the dogloo.
if there are no dogs in heaven, then when i die i want to go where they went. ---will rogers |

It was yesterday that I caught the dogs in the act of chewing and scratching around the entrance....I scolded both and it has seemed to keep them from continuing what they started. The house is in the garage...... they both love it and use it at the same time. They like to huddle together and even do so in the house, but atleast they are warmer. I plan to build something for the Pit for outside....the Malinois seems to do just fine.....she loves the snow (though we've had none yet). I would imagine once her winter coat finishes coming in, she'll be just fine. If money wasn't an issue, I would most likely have bought a Dogloo......for now, this seems to be just fine, keeping in mind that the house will also double as a whelping box down the road...

Whatever you decide, just make sure you put good bedding in it. That is what really helps hold the heat next to the dogs. I use hay because its cheap and the dogs can build their own bed.

I had placed an old body pillow in it.....first night it worked great.....the morning after the second night I found it shredded all over the place....

Try using some pine or cedar chips for bedding, instead of straw. The dogloos may work for a mild winter and they work fine for the summer heat - but when you have the possiblity of a lot sub-zero wind chill, I and my dogs prefer the chambered dog house for the hard cold winters.
I have had my GSD stay in the chambered dog house in 60 below wind chill and survive very comfortabley. And as prior stated, water is just as important for the dog in the winter and is the summer. Spend the money for your friend, one prior mentioned his dog didn't use the house during the snow. They will when they need it.

Built houses similar to plans on this site. Note is to also keep the house off the ground/kennel pad. We have 4 houses for the kennels, with straw for when it is cold. We have one of the young males that loves his house - he is either inside or on top of it, watching everything.

I bought one like that this year, so I am guessing the design is still the same, it took some real muscle to get those clips together.

Drew, you might want to reconsider using the dog house as a whelping box. You will have to add rails to keep the female from rolling onto the pups, but for normal use cleaning out under them will be a huge pain. I doubt you will want to haul the dog house inside your house either .

Okay, so what would be good for a whelping box....perhaps I can look into putting something together specifically for that purpos. Also, I am curious why you would say the dog would/could roll over on the pups.....kind of like when my baby is in the bed with my wife and me and I roll over when asleep? I honestly hadn't even considered that.
