Okay, just had to look.
I looked up Shepadoodle and found out all kinds of interesting stuff. Did you know that there is actaully a breed called a German Sheeppoodle? And this is NOT a GSD mixed with a poodle.
I never did find any pictures of an adult shepadoodle though. I would be very interested in seeing this if anyone happens accross any!
He sponsors the HGH herding trial. This year it is scheduled for October 9.
Von Stephanitz's book, "The German Shepherd in Word & Picture" shows a German Sheep Poodle in Fig. 81 & 82 (pg 100). It was used around Munsterland, Westphalia.
I was looking for a pic of a GSD/poodle (shepadoodle) mix. The sheep poodle is apparantly its own breed.
I saw a picture of a shepadoodle puppy, but could not find an adult.
The German Sheep Poodle is NOT a shepherd/poodle mix, it's a completely different breed. I'm guessing it's not real common anymore, even in Germany though...perhaps it died out with the popularity of the GSD.
I know. The sheep poodle is an old breed and according the site I read is very uncommon and "possibly extinct" even in it's native country (Germany).
I am still looking for pics of a shepadoodle! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif" alt="" />
I am not a fan of the doodle crosses (or -poos either). I have seen "purebred" doodles for sale on the net for around $2500.00. Are they nuts? Many of these dogs end up with the poodle coat (which is not totally hypoallergenic, and does shed minimally like human hair) and have to either take it to a groomer's to be shaved or do it themselves. For all that hassle, why not just get a standard poodle? Maybe if the SP were crossed with a good field line lab.....
If you want a working SP there are breeders that are striving to bring back the hunting/working ability of the dog and some are performing PAT tests (Puppy Aptitude Tests) on litters (Volhard, etc.). A good breeder should know his stock well enough that a potential puppy customer wanting a performance dog (obedience, field, etc.) should be able to be matched up with a suitable candidate. With the SP, Internet research is a good tool to finding breeders with the type of dog you want. The VIP site (Versatility in Poodles) http://www.vipoodle.org is a good site that promotes the working ability of the breed. There are a lot of other sites as well, but no, the breed is definately not as well known for their abilities as GSDs and labs.
Historically speaking, SPs have been bred for a variety of pursuits and have been around in one form or another for at least 500 years. Finding a good SP is not as difficult as finding a needle in a haystack.
Finding a doodle that won't break the bank....that's another story.
