Well, I paid $1250 for what I consider a once in a life time dog with a good pedigree. And full registration, needless to say.
I'm on the waiting list with Leerburg for a bitch puppy and $1800 for a puppy with full registration and great kennel backing is in my opinion a bargin.
The amount of time and stomach acid that I've wasted in the past on trying to get a fly-by-night kennel to make right on a purchase has taught me to deal with folks that care about their reputation.

Amen to that Will.......It is so critical to know who you are buying a pup from! I can't stress enough the importance of buying a pup from a reputable breeder, CHECK references if you have any doubts!
As for the limited reg...I can see both sides of the argument as well. I have purchased dogs with limited reg, and without. I agree that if you are going to work the dog andyway, it really shouldn't be a big deal, and it gives the breeder peace of mind. BUT, IMO, it is much more critical in a case of limited reg for the BUYER to be sure of who they are buying from.....once you have paid money for a pup and you invest time and effort, the last thing you need is to get stuck in a situation that you need to hem and haw about changing over the registtration to full. We all know of people who have had hard times getting original papers for puppies...never mind then getting the papers changed/updated!
That said, if I was ever to breed a litter, I'm still undecided as to how I would approach that issue. I think I learn more towards giving full reg to carefully selected buyers, but I'll cross that bridge if I ever come to it

#1 reason I will not become a breeder: Nobody would by from me, because I'll be requesting background checks, home inspections, interviews, references, visitation rights.... LOL. I'd wanna keep all the pups myself. Oh boy... house training a whole litter. Yikes.

I have always been of the opinion that unless someone wants a puppy from your dog don't breed it. Having said that I am in the top ten worldwide (possibly) for being a control freak. I am not giving you a puppy if I have any doubts as to what your intentions are. (This of course goes back to why are you breeding a dog that no one wants a puppy from?) Being this control freak if I sell or more likely give you a dog it is yours, end of story. After seven weeks of me panicing that I am doing all the right things so that you can have a good dog, I am spent and want the devils out of my sight.
I am smarter than my dog, your just not. |

Hmmm, I've always been a believer in you breed for yourself first and foremost. But then, we see a lot of "unless someone wants a puppy from your dog, don't breed it" mentality today...look at all the people who import dogs, breed them, then don't keep any of the pups to carry forward with.

Interesting thread...
Reminds me when I was looking for my first pup and went to look at a litter at a "working dog" breeder (they also sold show lines). The price was $1000 for a pup, and the litter looked ok, though it was hard to tell much as they had just been woken up and were pretty lethargic. I had mentioned I was not interested in breeding, but was looking for a dog for advanced training.
But I wasn't allowed in the kennel, and what little I could see it was a tin roof barn badly in need of repair. Even from my distance, I could smell the odor. Also, only the dam was on site, a dog that even to a newbie didn't impress. When it became apparent that I wasn't going to make a purchase right that minute, the price dropped to $500, for a "limited registration".
I walked. Even if the kennel had been top notch, the fact this offer was made only after it looked like the breeder was going to lose a sale indicated I needed to move on...

Hi,
With mine, the kennel was very clean, pups were very clean. I saw the mother and few other dogs at the kennel. The breeder did not want any price adjusment( well I did not try to as I did not know you could even bargin when going to buy a pet!!), I had seen the litter he had bought from Europe Last year and overall it was very impressive. I live in East coast and he was one of the very few breeders offerring German Bloodline gsd. I was not aware of working vs. non working bloodline. Even now I am not very clear. How can I see if my pup could be of working bloodlines? Can certain tasks/ training bring out the best in him??
Thanks,
Rashmi

Do a search for the sire/dam's names at http://www.pedigreedatabase.com and see if they are listed there, then post the links to the sire and dam on this thread.
