David, you are correct you know where your DOG is when it's crated. I wasn't clear that I would be more worried about the kids if I wasn't sure of my dog's behaviour. I've found most dogs listen WAY better than children. And most crates allow plenty of room for fingers to poke in.
And I crate train my dogs but really only use it when I'm not around to train them and they need to be in a control situation (dog show? hotel room? relatives?). When I'm around I am able to have my dogs safely out and they would be very vocal that's what they would want. I'm sure you are right though, with some time, I could unlock the door, go into my crated dog, correct for the barking, go back and lock the door.
Just another training issue.
