Oh, and befor anybody starts flogging me through the fleet I have since ended the practice, dogs are crated, kids are in tow
I don't think there is anything wrong with leaving your children and dogs in a vehicle for a few minutes at their ages. My oldest is 12 and youngest is 7. When I run into the gas station or post office, I leave the SUV running, put on the emergency brake and lock the doors. If someone tries to open the doors it will set off the alarm system in the car. But, then again, my twelve year old has been taught to drive cars and trucks and has been since he was 10. Pretty darn good at it too I might add.

Exactly. You have to know your kids, and whether or not you believe they are capable of behaving while you run into the store. You could have a five-year-old capable of starting the car for you (lol) or you could have a fifteen year old who does not possess the grey matter to butter their own toast, much less behave in a passenger seat for five minutes.
As for PETA, I enjoy visiting their website every once in a while when I am in need of a chuckle. I actually read an article about how they were trying to lobby against various restaurants' cruel practice of elastic-banding lobster's claws together while in the display tank. Apparently it is very stressful for the lobster. How do you argue against such a skewed world view? ...aside from ordering a nice big steak with lobster tail, I mean.

So they pick the silly rubber bands instead of how the yummy things are plunged in boiling water while still alive? Nutjobs..
On topic, I've been left alone in cars when I was a kid. Mom would take me shopping and I would politely excuse myself from the "shopping" part, instead just waiting in the car. Nowadays, and no I'm hardly old, but I'll bet if it was done now, my mom would have been thrown in jail and me in a foster home. Sad, really.
