We chose to put Fama down yesterday. She could no longer get up off the floor or walk. I was helping her around by supporting her back end with a towel.
We were no longer able to control her pain caused by spinal degeneration.
Every effort was given to keep her happy and comfortable as long as possible.
She was given a heroe's burial.
I miss her more than words can say.
I'll write more when I can.
David
Rest in Glory, our HERO Fama, the Kick-A$$ Bomb Dog...
Oh David, I've thought about your Semper Fi VFW Military Service K9 Fama so many times over the last few years -- She must have been well into her teens, and I wondered if perhaps you would help her pass without letting us know ... But now at least we can all share in expressing our grief, and experiencing a measure of closure by honoring Fama.
May God bless you & your family in this time of sorrow & mourning, David

I should have added that the Fama posts were among my favorite too.
She will be so missed.

Save all this, write a book.
I used to write down crazy episodes from country vet calls. People said write a book, but it's been done and done better that I could do it.
I don't think there's much about dogs in war, certainly nothing current.
Real life is SO much more interesting that fiction.
Tell us more!
David, for when you might be able to consider doing so, I'm now BUMPING this post from our good ol' cyber-friend Betty Landercasp

David, I am sorry to hear of Fama’s passing. She was an amazing dog, and will be missed by many.
The Last Battle
Author Unknown
If it should be that I grow frail and weak,
And pain should keep me from my sleep,
Then will you do what must be done,
For this – the last battle – can’t be won.
You will be sad I understand,
But don’t let grief stay your hand,
For on this day, more than the rest,
Your love and friendship must stand the test.
We have had so many happy years,
You wouldn’t want me to suffer so.
When the time comes, please, let me go.
Take me to where my needs they’ll tend,
Only, stay with me until the end.
And hold me firm and speak to me,
Until my eyes no longer see.
I know in time you will agree
It is a kindness you do for me.
Although my tail its last has waved,
From pain and suffering I have been saved.
Don’t grieve that it must be you
Who has to decide this thing to do;
We’ve been so close – we two – these years,
Don’t let your heart hold any tears.
Hugs to you and your family, David.

Oh God, I never learn not to read these at work, Kelly -- Fortunately, all our Canine Companions leave behind them on this earth is their physical bodies (IMHO) and afterwards, they have eternal Eyes that never grow dim & forever Tails that always wag I simply could not bear to believe otherwise.

Oh, David, I'm so sorry ... I know what your pain is like.
But I'm also so glad she had you to do what she needed.
Thank you Connie. It was really the only decision to which I could bring myself. I just couldn't see her in pain like that anymore.
I truly believe that she had an incredibly fulfilling life. She loved her job, and eventually the people around her, so much. She was a fantastic partner and really loved being a family member too.
