I was able to get to the link posted, but if you go directly to the shelter's web site, they don't show this particular dog.
I confess I am a little shocked to hear that the Wayne County Sheriff's Department would just turn over one of their retired K-9s to an animal shelter. Maybe I'm just naive and that's what a lot of departments do???
Reading the mission statement on the shelter's web site makes me feel a little bit better. While they don't come right out and say they are a no-kill shelter, they do say that, through their best efforts, no adoptable animal will be put to death.
I sure hope this guy finds a good home with people who understand his needs.
Several rescues are working on Hank. American Belgian Malinois Club Rescue posted that US Police Canine Association has asked members if they can help. MWD Rescue has also been contacted.
I don't know the status of Hank as of right now, but he's got a lot of folks pulling for him.
He was retired when his handler retired. He is a high drive dog and started to go a little batty with not having a job to do. He's explosives detection trained, not bite trained.
I am hoping the Police Canine Associating give the county Hell for dumping this dog like they did.
"Hank was placed with an "urban search & rescue" type group Saturday. He is going to be doing the work he was trained for & loves. The group was thrilled to find such a great working dog & he has a new home."
Thanks for your concern, David. It's pretty close to me too (onlyabout 5 or 6 hours), so I would have gone to get him if he was in danger of being PTS. He has too much potential to waste like that. I even had a dream of training him in Nosework...
He's in a good place now, and he's safe. It's nice to be able to report happy endings for a change....
Kelly, I am so excited to get into competition Nosework I have yet to see a "Fun Nosework" video with a really top notch dog performing detection, excepting Andrew Ramsey's dog. I have some irons in the fire, looking for a puppy, and I plan on seeing just how far we can go as a dog team. I know that, from what I have seen so far, Fama and I would be more than competitive. I wish I could post a video.
How do you say you are really good at something without sounding conceited? LOL
If you get into a dog you think may have competition potential and you want a hand, let me know. We aren't that far apart. I would be glad to give a lending hand. Detection work is just so much fun!
That is great news that Hank has found a home with someone who will appreciate him and provide for his special needs. I am really close to where he was being kept (less than an hour) and was getting ready to post on here to offer to help with transport or in any other way I could when I saw Amy's post that he had been adopted.
