A load of 16-#1 buck spreads to less than 3 inches at 15 feet. My old grandpa used to call that load "Blue Whistlers". Anyway, it is just right to core the dog and spare the victim. It is preferred to shoot just in front of the target and let the pellets carry a load of sand, gravel, dirt and/or pavement into the target. This also sharply limits how far the pellets carry. All this assumes you are brave enough to get involved at all in this sue happy country and we all know what ASSume means to all involved.

I have kept a short sword right behind my front door just for the stray dog-attack contingency for a long time. I figure I'll have greater accuracy and less chance of hurting my own dog or a person if that be the case. I always have to walk out and look the street up and down before loading our dogs up.
Our animal control has the same funding across all areas and neighborhoods, but when you call from a super-nice area and say "my neighbors' poodle is running loose", you are going to get a much quicker response than if I call and say "the gang-bangers' pit bulls are out again". In case #1, the neighbors are definitely going to want their poodle back, and will pay a fine to get it. In case #2, they are taking a chance on getting bitten; getting into grief with the Juaritos/Grand Bario Central/Southside Locos, and knowing that that no one is going to claim the dog and pay anything anyway.

I have a Benelli Super 90 ( along with about five other shotguns, hey, I'm half owner of a gun store! ) that I can put slugs into a 4" circle at 35 yards all day long, so I'm fairly confident of my ability to hit my target.
And five combat tours hasn't hurt my accuracy, either.
For now I'm going to stick with the shovel. I'll leave the real life shotgun shooting for more experienced people like you

That is very cool
Thanks Will and Hugh. I'll definitely dust the shotgun off and try out your loading method, and blue whistlers next time I target shoot to test my accuracy. I can't remember the last time I shot a shot gun. I prefer rifles, preferably with a scope and laser, and if it's heavy, a tripod helps

There is nothing wrong with a laser sight on a shotgun. Since my first babysitter was an over/under .22 Bee/20 gauge, I have never felt the need. However, it is nice the way you can focus your attention fully on the target.
I like the short sword idea too. I shouldn't be forgotten that Rome conquered half the world with the Spatha. Do you go in for the full regalia with grieves, a studded skirt, Back and Breast and a helmet with a plume?

I have the very good fortune to live in a rural area. I pack a pistol when I'm out with my dogs on the farm. I've only had to use it twice. We do have a problem with feral dog packs around here sometimes.

Only twice?
I think I am with Mr. Rambeau on the dangers of annoying the Leerberg gals.

You're lucky to be able to take yours with you. I don't have a carry permit so my gun stays in my house. It's a 9mm Sig Sauer, holds 15 rounds. I don't have the 5 combat tours Will does but I'm a rather good shot. Beyond 25 yards though, my skill level drops significantly. I guess my GSD can take it from there !!

Lilly and I just spent the most incredible weekend in Maine at a private training seminar with Chris Fraize. Lord the things I have done wrong....but Lilly is already showing progress on Chris's program, thats in 7 DAYS!!!! Anyway Chris spoke of a small wand that shocks animals that are running loose, I will find out what it is called, maybe some already know, Chris says he puts it up his sleeve when he is out and strange dogs charge him. Wonder if it works on husbands and teenagers???? Naw

Given that banning a breed is almost impossible and restrictions like muzzling are routinely ignored, it seems that the wisest solution would involve heavy penalties for dog owners who are involved in such incidents.
For instance, a large fine and the extermination of the dog for an unprovoked bite, maybe liability for medical costs, maybe more severe penalties if the bite is particularly damaging. Any second offense on the part of the same owner would involve felony charges.
If enforced, this would seem to be enough of a deterrent. Surely this is not groundbreaking legal theory on my part, so does anyone (legal expert, dog expert etc) know what the problem with the above protocols is/are?
