Natalya
The frustrations I refered to concern waiting until a dog is fully matured physically before spaying or nuetering......my experience was that done too soon it can cause problems. I don't think they mature as well mentally when it's done too soon either but it's just my opinion and from assumptions I made after doing some research years after the fact. I'm no expert.....that's why I spend so much time reading here!

Of course I was joking. Sometimes I forget that, on the internet, you have to spell out every time you make a joke, lest people get bent out of shape. Not that you were;-)!
I have yet to find a vet who will do a vasectomy, although I know it used to be quite common. Why would anyone totally alter an animal and put various body systems at risk, when a vasectomy would prevent any unwanted litters without changing the dog's hormone levels, drives, personality, manner in which he interacts with his environment, etc.? Of course, I'm only talking about dogs neutered for population control, convenience, etc.-not legitimate health problems. If anyone hears of any vets who will do this, let me know, please. It's something I may be interested in the future.

A vasectomy - very interesting option. Will a dog with this procedure still try to mate females in heat? Will he be as "I gotta find a way out of this yard" crazy?

I'm sure he'd still try to mate w/a female in heat, but I've never experienced the "I gotta find a way out of this yard" crazy; I feel that's nothing but a control issue. As my friend Mick J says, "you can't always get what you want." ;-)
Steve, how is that helpful to me, and my dog, in this God forsaken town???? Merely pointing out that others have easy access to what I've searched high and low for simply isn't kind.

I hope it's just a control issue (as I'm hoping to have more control as my pup and I progress). I've never had a male dog before (except for one GSD pup who never reached maturity before he jumped our high wall and was never seen again ), but I've heard they will dig or scale a wall, acts they don't usually do, if they smell a female in heat. I'm SO hoping that's not always the case.
I'd much rather do the vasectomy thing, if that's the best way to go for my dog. Not planning on neutering him until he's 2 years at least, so will have plenty of time to research. I'd really rather not do either...neutering is such an invasive surgery. It makes me cringe.

You don't like the idea of a nice weekend get-away/surgical procedure to...Decatur?

Sandy,
If you're so opposed to doing anything, why not leave your boy intact for good? Are you obligated by a rescue or breeder contract?
*he looks looks like a real sweetheart

No contractual obligation to neuter, but am weighing having it done as more time goes by. Several factors: I don't want him on lead everytime he's in the backyard and at this time (9 mos old) he hasn't tried scaling the 6 foot wall , but I'll have to see as time goes on...he may be willing to do it to get to a female when he matures. Secondly, the prostate consideration. Thirdly, the fact that I want him as a personal protection dog. Each factor gets a different answer so it's difficult to know what to do at this point. It may be more obvious what action to take as time goes by (time is great for that ).
Thanks, he is a sweetheart....a rascally sweetheart, less of a terror on paws as he used to be, but it's always just below the surface

I had a male dachsund/beagle mix with my female cocker spaniel and even though he was fixed, he was still very interested in the female when she came into season. He was our radar letting us know to put her up or call the stud
I would think that a vasectomy would be even cheaper than neutering and much less stressful and painful for the dog.
btw, Sandy, Lear looks fantastic!!!
