Yeah I hear you. I had to break down and do what was best for me. You should see the looks when I buy meat for my dogs. People can not believe I would buy human food for my dogs and then turn arounnd and feed it raw. Oh well.

we usually pull up to the checkout counter with two huge supermarket carts completely filled with frozen meat. i don't think the checkout people have ever once let it pass without comment.
"having a lot of company?" they always say, eyebrows raised.
my husband and i have fun making up wilder and more outlandish stories about why we are buying so much meat.
i keep wondering why they don't just check out the food and mind their own business.

Jenni, where do you get the meat you feed your dogs?

Yuko, how often do you feed rabbit to your dogs? And how old are the rabbits you feed?
I'd much rather give my pups a deer that was frolicking in an open field seconds before it frolicked onto the highway. Frolicked into the highway? You crack me up!

Glad I can amuse you, Amber;-)
I always get strange looks at the market. I buy some really weird stuff, hardly any "normal" meat, and little to no other food. I don't eat nearly as well as I feed the dogs! They never say anything, but I can only imagine what they think I'm doing with tons of livers, gizzards, soupbones, necks and backs, and the occasional foot or oxtail. I kinda wish they'd ask so I could make up something fun.
Mike, I get most of my meat from hunting friends. A coworker's husband is an avid hunter and hates to throw any of it away, so he processes it in his garage and gives me absolutely all the scraps and anything with bone. Right now, I have a chest freezer full of pheasant, duck, and tons of venison. I also am not above feeding them a deer that's been hit by a car and put out of its misery by local LE. You gotta have an "in" to get that kind of deal, though;-). As of yet, I have not sunk to the level of running them over on purpose. I can't afford to replace my car.

jenni, do you have to get a permit to take the roadkill? i keep forgetting to check with our local fish and game to find out the regulations. i don't think they allow just anyone to remove roadkill around here, but i'm not sure.
what i'd like to do is visit wherever it is the highway crew deposits the roadkill (in winter) and load up on some frozen ones.

that's awesome, Jenni...now I have a reason to start hunting again this year
As I've said here many times previously, if we ate as good as our dogs, we'd all be in better shape and healthier
I get the same looks in my couple of stores I shop at...the butcher is the only one who knows what's going on...everyone else definitely gives me the "check this guy out" look...lol
A couple of days ago I walk up with beef heart, 20lbs of chicken quarters, batteries for my camera, and a 12 pack of diet coke.
I need another freezer!
btw, speaking of worms/parasites, I was reminded watching my dog chew on all kinds of stuff in my backyard that they get most of their worms from licking/chewing stuff on the ground or in wood, water bowls outside, etc...
the raw food we give them from retail/wholesale stores are usually inspected and guaranteed to not be infected by stuff like that...

Alice, I've been told that you don't near me, but I know in most other places, you do. I live in Yuppieville, so I think we're allowed because no one ('cept me) would actually DO it, lol. A deer was hit by a car and stumbled into my aunt's yard; they called the police who shot it, then called a friend to come get it for food purposes. I was told that if you hit it, you may pick it up, but I've never checked into it. If this is true, I'll begin reinforcing my bumpers. (JOKE)
I really think it's an area thing; in other parts of the country, a lot of people would do this-in my little corner, probably 5% of the population would even believe I was serious if I mentioned it.

Ask your local law enforcement next time you see them about the road kill policy. Maybe they will call you to come claim it!

Oh, I already have an "in" so to speak, which is why I've never inquired formally about the policy, but it's a good way for someone who doesn't have access to hunters to get some fresh, corn-fed, hormone/antibiotic-free venison!
