Michael, I agree with you. My trainer years ago said the dog should just "watch" the man instead of going off as the word implies. I know for sure he's watching the guy when he's going off.
Howard, I believe a Police K9 SHOULD be able to display this and on someone passive if necessary.
If you along with the other boyz execute a felony stop, and whether the suspect is being passive or not, I want my dog to let him know with no doubt he better comply because there is a K9 on scene, and where he may know certain actions won't warrant getting shot, others may warrant teeth in him.
Howard, I would love to see a photo of how you have this rigged up. I take it the decoy has a sleeve or suit on if he is sliping the muzzle :-D
Micheal, you right you would be in a suit. The dog will understand he is biting a suit, but what you are doing here is imprinting the thought that the muzzle can come off at any moment. So when you are doing straight civil work in the muzzle, the dog should still be thinking it may come off, allowing you to see what the dog would truely do if the muzzle was off. That is the theory.
One more question (and thanks all for the input!) I also see 'active aggression' used sometimes in my reading, is that the same as a dog being 'civil'?
Howard, i must say i have been wanting to get a basket muzzle
They look nice, and are very expensive (German Made Muzzles) but I think there are too many straps and buckles to deal with or fail. I like the Leerburg or Hard dogs muzzles a little better as they have more support to keep the dogs' nose from getting crunched on the strike.
