Back in the early 80s I had a GSD pup die from Parvo shortly after I got him. Very very ugly. He died at the vets within 24hrs, he never really had a chance.
Yes, I have heard this from owners. I can understand 100% not putting the pup through it.
But when the pup is showing no symptoms but diarrhea and some listnessness, I sure do see the value in waiting another day. Perhaps Ted's vet meant if the pup started to have pain, etc.
I'm very sorry that happened to you (and the pup), Sue.

The pup is incredibly full of energy. I'm really shocked. And hungry as heck. He'll have to wait til AM, though.
Interesting, the vet also counciled me yesterday on putting him down. "A lot of people do, since the mortality rate is so high even while treating symptoms."
In between lecturing you on the evils of fresh food?
Too funny Connie...
Ted, did your vet have anything to say about the fact that your unvaccinated raw-fed puppy got over parvo in record time (despite his "the mortality rate is so high etc." speech)?
It sounds like this pup of yours is unstoppable and will have a long bright future ahead of him.
What's his name btw? (sorry if I missed it)
Any pictures?

Susan, that's just awful. Awful.
Connie, yes I endured much lecturing about the need for bagged dog food. I did not comment back. Why bother?

Yuko,
I wasn't going to rub their nose in it, as it were. It was funny when I re-capped how bad this was "going to be" with all of the gore I was told would happen today.
So with all of the diarrhea, how many times did you record those?
Ummm well, none
Oh, that would be because of the anti-poop medicine, eh?
Ummm well, no we don't give that
Oh, well how about the vomiting. He must have vomited?
Ummm well, no and we didn't give medicine for that either
I see. So why should my dog stay here another nite.
Well, ummm... well... his iron is low.
I see. Well, this was fun, we'll be leaving now. Please process my refund for a partial stay, please
Regarding not pooping while at the hospital, it occurs to me that he simply didn't want to poop in his crate.

Ted, are you serious!???! Bagged food for a dog who just kicked Parvo's a$$??? What is WRONG with these people? Do they have zero common sense? Why are they not simply thrilled that he's ok, and commending you for having such a healthy pup that he was able to beat this? Gee, it must be that luck thing again... Honestly, I would comment back. Perhaps they just haven't thought of it this way...really, really, trying to give them the benefit of the doubt on this...

Just think, folks...our government mandates vaccines for our kids...they can't even go to school without proof of certain shots.
it's sick...we're losing our country.

Only because we have been passive.
They have told us for so long that vaccines are required that we believe them. You can actually get waivers for your kids. http://thinktwice.com/
Vets can also issue wavers for rabies vaccines (the ONLY one required by law) if they are convinced that the dogs will be harmed, or if a titer test shows immunity.

I didn't mean to imply Ted should have put the pup down. BAck then, I don't think the vets had figured out how to get a pup past parvo, so there really wasn't much of a choice. If it were to happen to a pup of mine these days, I'm sure I would want the vet to do everything possible to save the pup. They just didn't think they could save them back then.

No no, I knew you didn't.
And even now there is a kind of rule of thumb about four days..... that if there is no swing towards health at the 4-day mark, there is discussion of not making the pup go through anything else. This is just something I have read a few times.
Ted's pup had his upwards swing at ONE day. Little Iron Dog.
Every time I think of that pup, I smile. I know he has some strength to regain, and some fatigue to get over, and some digestive flora and fauna to replace..... but all that is totally doable. Tough lil puppy. :>
