It's not safe to go by the words of the owner but you get to know the dog thru the owner with more questions?

I'm confused too???
I think that we all know, when a pet owner goes to a trainer for aggression issues, it usually (and I use that term lightly) ends up being pack issues, or lack of respect from the dog to the handler.
IF shown how to handle the dog correctly, some issues can be overcome, unless it is a genetic fault in the dog, or the dog and handler just do not match.
This is why I think it is important to have an "entrance eval" so the trainer can physically see what the dog is doing.
I would have to say that it should be at the owners expense to bring the trainer to them, so that the dog is in his own usual surroundings in order for the trainer to actually SEE what the dog is doing.
I have heard all these stories from people, they come here and the dog does nothing to what they described.....go to their area and the dog behaves at least close to what they were describing. Most of the time it is A) not as bad as was described or B) WAY worse than what was described.
Geesh, hope that made sense.

No doubt about it, Carol is right David...Finding the right consultant (if you will) can be laborious.
Take heart, it's worth the effort.

I lived in Cleveland for several years and I met many graduates from National K9......and I'm still waiting to meet a good one. The trainers from my obedience club in Cleveland that attended that school came back no better than they had left, but they now thought that they could train protection dogs, aggressive problems dogs, etc - they couldn't , and the results were awful to watch.
Being only a few hours north of National K9, there are several 'trainers' in my area 'certified' through them. I found Will's description of many graduates to be very accurate. Their high opinion of themselves and their pretty certificates usually far outstrips any knowledge or experience they have to back it up.

Well of course you would interview the handler/owner as well as evaluate the dog.
Michael, not sure where you are going with any of this other than for the sake of an argument.
We don't go there.

For myself Michael,
I'm still waiting for an answer to Will's straight forward question. What exactly do you train for, what kind of dogs do you handle? For how long? How much pretty scrimshaw latin do you have papering your walls?

I am seriously considering working with a "professional" to have Sasha evaluated for some of her aggression issues with other dogs. She has had several "bad" experiences, have made progress, and want to get over the last hump. We have the typical idiots where I live that don't have control over their dogs...hence the bad experiences. The person who I was thinking about using is a Law Enforcement canine trainer.
Is there any specific "questions" that I should ask/consider to make sure they the best fit for me?
I can provide their names and website in a PM. They are local to the Cleveland area.
Thanks in advance,
Dave
Dave, I'm sure you'll be amazed at the responses your question has illicited!
Maybe you could pm Will Rambeau for a recommendation? He stated that he lived in the Cleveland area for several years; perhaps he knows of a good trainer in your area...
