... Hitting is not a good idea. I've seen dogs become hand shy or defensive biters that give no warning. This can get dangerous around children who just want to pet your dogs. .... My experience is limited to watching dog behavior shows (Cesar and "It's me or the dog") along with a lot of reading on this website and working with trainers. .... a dog can develop issues at just about any age so don't expect that if they are not becoming possessive or dominant now, that they won't down the road.
Well, you're a very good student! (My experience is limited to watching dog behavior shows .... along with a lot of reading on this website and working with trainers.)
Good post.

Thanks, Connie! By limited, I should say that I am not doing protection work! I sure do spend a lot of my time learning about dogs!
Wow, I FINALLY got some stars!

Yes, I knew that you were way overstating "limited."

I never let my dogs into my house, let alone my bed, not even if they whine, like the chi puppy did a few months ago when I first got her. She stopped the whining after 2 days like I expected.
Allowing dogs to sleep in the bed, on the couch, etc. could create rank order problems in the pack.
Besides, this way I will not have to clean any accidents or vacuum all the hair of the GSD.
And the birds are happy ,too this way. They get the hair of the GSD to make nests in the trees

Kind of off topic.

OK, I confess, both of mine usually sleep with us. I don't have any rank issues with either of them, though. They both acknowledge me as boss, though. They don't rest on me, but they like to rest next to me, usually by my ankles or knees. They do use my husband for a pillow, but then, I think our dogs don't completely acknowledge him as boss.

Me, too. I allow my two dogs in bed. We don't have any rank issues with them.
My GSD likes to stay in bed with us while we read or watch TV, as soon as we go to sleep, she automatically goes back into her crate, which is next to our bed. The Westie either sleeps in his own doggy bed, which is also in the bedroom, or in the bed with us.

ok i have always allowed my dogs to sleep in the bed or on the couch if they so choose
i dont see how this posses a problem.
I will not add to the useless snide comments regarding you hitting the dog.... but to answer this,
Bad idea.
My opinion is that dogs should never be allowed to sleep with their owner. There is no reason WHY to let them on the bed, it's unnecessary- a dog can feel still close to you while lying on his dog bed on the floor right next to your bed, where he belongs. At night, my puppy's crate is moved to right next to my bed, she sleeps quietly because she can hear/smell me breathing and knows I am right there. BUT no dogs are allowed on- bed is for humans, and bed is for me.
Dogs should not be allowed on the same level as their owner! They may begin to think they ARE on the same level.
You have a Cane Corso, not a lap dog.
(Plus IMO it's not hygienic- they shed, their paws walk around outside and in the kennel and dirty dog runs all day.)

Anyway, to answer to OP's question, I would not recommend it, I share Bernard's (trainer BDFG) point of view on this subject.

Neither of my pups have been in or on my bed. Neither of them are allowed in my bedroom, either.
That is 'my room'.
At night they sleep in their crates.
Have A Great Day,
