Oh, I meant to add:
I'd add variations only one at a time, but one of them can soon be that you vary the time between "yes" (marker) and the reward, by a little bit. She knows it's coming now, and if it comes in 3 seconds instead of 1, that's OK.

Don't get too hung up on the "stand in front of her" part.
Any time she stops barking, you can mark and reward.
Ditto.
Also shake that dog's paw.
Smart dog! (I'm sure she will learn "shake paw" in seconds. )
Gotcha!! I'll not just stand in front of her.
OOOO...yea, the shake paw command!!! OK, so, I guess I'll try it with "paw".
You guys are great! Thanks,
All of us :-)

The hand touch is another really fun one, and it is very useful in other situations as well, I have found.
I use the handtouch, and then hold, to distract my dog at times, and even used it at the vet during temperatures and injections recently, which greatly reduced the amount of physical restraint needed.

The hand touch, ok I got that one. I'll try that. Now, what is
"the handtouch, and then hold"?
Thanks again

I ask her to "hold", in otherwords, continue touching my hand with your nose, until I release you.
If my hand moves, follow, and keep your nose in contact.
If my hand is stationary, be still, and keep your nose in contact.

OK, so this may sound like a "newbie" question but here goes.
Does Layla have to be barking before I train her "no bark".
Does this process take a while for the dog to learn? I guess I just want to know how patient I need to be as we work.
Thanks

What is your goal?
Do you want the dog to alert and then stop when told to stop, or do you want a companion dog who is quiet, period?
Bark is a tricky command for a new trainer to be deciding on. JMO. Again, barking (and ignoring "no-bark") is not at all like, say, "sit."

Something to keep in mind is that barking is, to a dog, an instant, self-rewarding behavior.

Hi!
"alert and then stop when told to stop" sounds like the plan. I most definitely don't want a dog who is just quiet all the time.
Thanks
