It serves to remind her that when I say sit, it doesn't mean stand still staring through the shadows across the street, it means sit. Etc.
Teagan has the lovely habit of counting til 3 when I tell her to sit, and THEN sitting....Toby always says it's like she's going 'Did you tell me to sit? I just happened to decide to sit myself, what a coincidence.'
Since we're not doing competition obedience, I haven't freaked out about it - she will sit like I ask her too, she just seems to like to throw in her own little independent streak in there.
I use it during walks because the minute he is hooked up to a leash he is pulling, and not pulling to get somewhere faster, pulling for the sheer pleasure of it.
We tried stopping when he pulled, switching directions, clicking/treating when the leash went loose and he didnt respond to any of it.
He has a high pull drive lol.
I was worried about him hurting his throat because he would pull to the point of gagging and choaking so I was considering the prong even though he was still a bit young.
BUT
Then He tore my rotator cuff, which was the third time its been torn and I can't afford to chance hurting it again so we went to the prong while walking and it was an instant sucess,
he self corrects with it and we can walk for miles and miles happily and with no pain.
Other than that I have used it for pack structure corrections because he responds better to that correction from me than anything else. I have only corrected him once hard enough for him to yelp and roll on his back, and that was for knocking my son down and trying to stand over him...I was thankful for the prong at that point because otherwise I don't know If I could have corrected him enough to make it never happen again.
edited to add:
I rarely have to correct him while walking anymore and he learned within one long walk where the end of the leash was and rarely pulls to the point of correction. Now I can just jingle the leash and he knows to relax. When the prong comes out he does the happy dance and goes to sit by the front door, so he associates with good things and likes it.
