Quote: Casual breeding, period, pure or cross, stinks.
My dog was found running by the side of a rural highway. (He is the best dog in the entire world, btw, worth his weight in gold.)
He is likely one of the pups dumped out into the world by a woman who has bred her lab bitch to her golden male at least 9 times. The rural county shelter takes these pups in twice a year, usually 6 months after the pups are born and she's given up hope of selling them, so they tend to know when a litter is on the ground. Guessing at an average 8 pups in a litter, that's already 72 dogs. It breaks my heart to know that there are dogs like my boy suffering due to greed.
I'll quote Connie again, "Casual breeding, period, pure or cross, stinks."

Thank you Connie,
I'd forgotten, this is even worse than the 150 dollar pure Yorkie Terriers advertized from the roadside.
It's the miracle of birth bs.
Or whatever other lame brain excuse can be thought of.
Snap! I know! The dog should get his jollies once in it's life. How about that one?

but I'd put my Dad's 'half breed' up against any of your all's pure breeds.
Ummm....ok.
Have your dad title that dog to a SchH III and a few of us can get together to compete against him at some trial then.
Let us know where and when to meet.

Nevermind. I thought you had a piece, but you're still not full.
Nobody is talking about any crosses that are bred for a purpose. For example, a very well respected forum member that uses hound crosses for the most serious criminal tracking you've ever heard of.
Or we could talk about working lurchers.
Those examples are bred for a purpose. They aren't breeding because they want their dog to "get some". Or because they are about to get them spayed so, "Why not?"
You are only talking about the mutts that are adopted or found and given a home and pointing out all the 2 purebreds that you've found abandoned.
So if everyone is talking about willy nilly, no regard for the lives or health of the animals breedings and not mutt vs. purebred, what are you talking about?

"I have a Pyr and before I get her spayed I want her to have one litter. What my wife and I are looking for, asking for advice on more correctly, is what other breeds are a decent mix with a Pyr? I have seen a lot of mixed breeds floating around the internet and instead of willy-nilly picking one, we thought it would be best to get some more info from others.
The question you probably asked yourself is why not another Pyr? And I'm not sure as to why not. Which is another reason why I am here now.
My wife would like to breed her with a Newfie, and I'm down with that as an initial idea."

I wish there was a way to let people know just how much work a litter of pups is, much less a litter of large breed pups. I think this would discourage a lot of people from even trying it.
The one litter I took in was such a nightmare, and my house will never be quite the same. Keeping Loki was well worth the hassle, but as much as I love dogs and puppies.... never ever ever again.
If people really want to breed I suggest Guppies.

Exactly. This isn't about mixed vs. pure breds, this is about breeding for fun rather than for function.

I'd tell him to breed her to a sheep. That way the litter can guard itself. Pick the biggest male you can find too, that could be worth a few bucks with puppy buyers. Make sure you advertise them as OFA champion lines. Nobody will know what that means, but they'll be real impressed.
