Mara, I've been sadly disappointed by the performance of this garment. I think there are better designs out there, ones that may cool the belly more. This does a decent job of deflecting some of the sun's rays, but I can't see that it really has much cooling power.

Jamie, if you ever decide to wet your dog down before going outside, especially if it's daytime, just do the tummy and inside the legs. With a double coated dog, if you do the whole body, you can actually create problems. The water in on the top of the body, in the double coat, can create more heat...like steam heat.

Im not being argumentative, but where did you hear that?
i ALWAYS make sure that tucker has access to either a kiddie pool full of water and trust me, he gets soaked through lying in that. Or if we head down to the beach and he's swimming he gets saoked through and i have never noticed him being more uncomfortable in the heat after a good soaking. He is less "weary" and has more energy once he has cooled himself down that way.

I was volunteering at the Ontario Regional Agility Championships and it was VERY hot. Probably 30 or over with the humidex (that's about 100). Saw dogs with and without coats. I did not like the the swamp cooler type coats. My thinking is that the dog would just get steamy.
This is the coat you want. I saw some of these there and thought they did a pretty good job.

On really hot days I take a bottle of water with some ice cubes in it with me and just soak his paws every so often. Seems to make him happier.
If we're outside doing yardwork, I spray him down with the hose and let him run around.
So far no problems. And there's been a fair amount of days close to 90 degrees.

I've heard this too, that if you wet the whole coat, the moisture actually traps the heat next to the skin. I would imagine it's quite different if you have access to enough cool water for complete and repeated immersion though.
My dog is single-coated but he's black. I've bought all sorts of cool-down stuff, including the Ruff Wear cool coat. It works and I like it, but sometimes it's too much to pack and it's not always convenient to find enough water to keep it wet. I always end up using Kool Collars and Ice Pups for temperature control and so far, so good.

hmmm...i've never had that problem.
Maybe Tucker's just always gotten good & soaked all the way through that it doesn't have that effect.
i'll have to keep my eye on that though.

I don't take it as argumentative...
My main sport is agility, and with dogs running intensely in warm to hot weather, this is the recommended way to keep them cool enough for competing. I'm sorry I don't have any links to send your way, but I've read this advice many times in agility related articles, and have used it myself with my GSD.
Playing around in my yard, I'll spray her all over with the hose...swimming, of course she gets thoroughly wet all over. But, when we're training or competing, I'm very careful with how I wet her down.
Also, there are some articles I've seen here in which Cindy discusses dealing with heat stroke. If you notice, they do the same thing...using cool water on their tummies and inner thighs to bring their temperature down.

no links needed leigh, i trust ya!
maybe that's the differnce. i generally don't let him go full out running and playing if we're outside during a hot day, even if he has been soaked through.
good to know though! I thought i was being pretty smart

On a side note- I saw 3 beautiful GSD's shaved totally naked the other day at work and I wanted to vomit.
Right now the Grooming Salon is a shaving factory. Any breed you can imagine including labs and cattle dogs. Its disgusting. People won't hear reason. Its sad.
Quick question- since we're on the topic, for the poor naked dogs... what's a good doggy sunscreen? I'm getting this question a lot lately.
