I'm no expert on this, But the past 2 months i have literally looked at hundreds of breeders for my next working line GSD. Most price ranges were from 1200-2000 for puppies. Already titled dogs we are talking a lot more. The only breeder I found to be very high was Gunbil. His imports are 3000+.Dogs bred in US are about 2000 from him. And not a true working line dog. Showline pedigree with a working line attitude I was told. That's all I will say about him, because I don't anything about his dogs, Just the prices he has posted.
There was some cheaper breeders, but they were more along the lines of family pet. Around 500-800 with basically no titled dog history. Still might be good dogs though. I can't judge them.

I would only ever be looking for a family pet. I enjoy watching shows and sports and I'm training my current dog to pull a cart and run beside my bike with a Springer, but when I look, it will be for a pet/companion dog first. I'm always encouraged when a breeder's questionaire for puppy purchase asks what I will be expecting of the dog, instead of just labeling them 1st pick, 2nd pick, etc. My first pick would be very different than the first pick of someone looking to title in Schutzhund.

Really if a breeder does all the recommended health tests of dam and sire, and has excellent temperament history, and has put in the time to train and obtain titles etc. any price they can ask and receive is fair. Raising quality animals takes a ton of work.

I know you can still get very nicely bred working Border Collie pups for $400-$600 (herding bred, parents working livestock on farms and/or competing on a high level in USBCHA trials) BC pups from sport breeders (ie, agility, flyball) tend to run about double that.

I am currently on the quest for a new GSD pup. I can tell you that there are many really good pups out there, from reputable breeders with great pedigree for about $1200. Having said that, the guarantees do vary. Some breeders have offered me an "extended" or "better" guarantee for a higher purchase price. The breeders that at first glance seemed great, but upon further inspection were not... what I was looking for, charged about $1500 - $1800. As for higher prices for 1st pick, I didn't encounter that personally. It was either a first come, first pick - or - the breeder would match the pup with what they considered the right home. And, of course on top of all those prices, is usually shipping, unless you are lucky enough to live close to the breeder you wish to buy from.
Speaking of which - does anyone have any experience with prices to ship an 8 or 10 week old pup from the US to Canada? Best airline? Worst airline? Do they rent out crates (since I already have 2 and really don't want to have to spend for another)?

I totally agree and didn't mean to imply otherwise. The cost of a pup wouldn't be the deciding factor for me, it would come down to the breeder and what they did or did not put into the pups = dogs. Good breeders deserve the fee they charge, plus all of that isn't really income as there are expenses incurred.
Phaedra, I'm curious what did the breeders include in the extened or better guarantee? I am pretty sure that crates are not rented, maybe the breeder would loan one for shipping. Then you'd have to pay to ship it back, probably not economical. Good luck with the puppy quest!

I read a blurb about that in my Dog World magazine. What I've read about the Tibetan Mastiff, though, is that they need very good socialization and an experienced trainer, because they are powerful and independent.

Cost is often a deciding factor for dogs I'm looking at. Mainly the stuff that does not have a dollar amount because believe it or not that is a cost. For instance, I don't care how nice the dog is. I won't co own it with the breeder or another person of the breeder's choice. I won't agree to have my dog handled by a pro, the breeder, the breeder's handler, or agree to the number of shows per year that the dog must be at for "its campaign." I certainly would never agree to a new common term I'm seeing where you have to split litters with the breeder for the bitches entire life at my expense (with the breeder getting all picks) or my personal favorite agree to stand a dog to any bitch the breeder chooses at any time at my expense.
Now before you go wait a minute... these are terms on a 8 - 12 week old puppy. At that stage of the game I have no idea if the dog will ever be show material let alone "breeder" material.
This is part of the reason I'm looking outside of the country for my next dog.
