I've casually marked/rewarded Louie for a minute or 2 at a time for focus since he's been super engaged today. Or is loving the hot dog/turkey bacon mix. Whatever, I'm NOT complaining! He is doing FABULOUSLY... it's gotten really consistent so I added in a "watch" verbal cue and he's getting it. I am amazed at this break through of sorts.
Update: Now he won't stop staring at me.
Breakthrough indeed! And finding that he does have foods of joy -- nothing better in training than food drive, IMHO.
If you decide to go with a verbal marker too, don't forget to load it. (I have found no problems with using both.)

Awesome, Simon, and I'm just very happy for you both that you are seeing good progress! Your hard work and patience with this pup is beginning to really pay off. Good on 'ya!
My wife fed Louie dinner using CJ's advice and he was quite receptive again. We will continue with that and "casual" marker training and see if we can build his confidence up some more.
So I've been doing sessions of focus training (having him make eye contact) and he's been doing really well (and enjoying his mixed treat bag of hot dog/turkey bacon/steak). He will look at me 8 out of 10 times for his treat and I assign the "watch" command and he's good with that too, but after the training is over it's like he forgets. An hour or 2 later I'll say "watch" and it's like he doesn't know what I'm talking about or is ignoring me. Does that mean I assigned the "watch" command too early? Should I do more reps with the "watch" command or move back to just him looking at me with no verbal command?
