This is like a walk down memory lane with mention of books I read years ago -- and they are still good books!
In a more contemporary vein, I've got three to recommend.
"A Dog's Purpose" by W. Bruce Cameron. Not at all like "Art of Racing in the Rain" but then again it's a lot like it. It spoke to my heart and lifted my spirits. Fast read. Keep your Puffs nearby.
Next two are Christmas-specific and would be great gift books:
"The Christmas Dog" by Melody Carlson. Heartwarming, often humorous. A good story line that's very lightly Christian but not intrusively so. Nice ending.
"A Dog Named Christmas" by Greg Kincaid. Set in Kansas (my state), by a Kansas author. To quote from the summary: "peace on earth and good will toward men...and animals." Delightful!
I'll be watching this thread for more suggestions!
Not a novel but one of the best "coffee table" books is "Dog Hero's of September 11th" Superb photos, great bios of the dogs and handlers, and a memorial to all those that worked and searched for live people.
Great reading and looking for all ages. Tough to read and keep dry eyes though.

Hurry Home Candy

I remember a teacher reading us this book in class, and from what my mom told me they had to call her to come pick me up because i was crying too much and they couldn't console me.
I picked up the book a few years later, and it still made me cry.
Im curious to know if anyone else has read it??
Recently read "Dog on it" and I would recommend it also! David Rosenfelt's Andy Carpenter series books are good too! I'm currently reading books in a series by Shirley Rousseau Murphy where the cats Joe and Dulcie tell the story.
I did not like "A Good Dog: The Story of Orson" by John Katz.
