I have a hickory walking stick AND a pistol. But then, I live in the country, not in the city. Varmints are fair game. Any animal, dog or not, that happens to try to attack me and/or my puppers on our own farm are varmints. End of story <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif" alt="" />
"sure hope it works and sure hope I don't need it!!!"
Sorry, I'm not going to trust my personal safety ( or my dogs ) on something that "I hope" will work. I know a handgun will - get a concealed carry permit, learn to use the weapon effectively, and actively carry a pistol in a caliber over .40 and you won't have to worry about the "sure hope it works" part.
The gun is a solid solution but for those of us living in subdivisions (mine has quarter acre lots) with kids running around, and laws against discharging a gun in the city, it is a tough (and not realistic) option.
I'm a fan of pistols. If not legal in your area , consider using bear spray. Most are variants of OC (oleoresin capsicum, or pepper spray). Some come in concentrations as high as 20%. More is better.
Some cities have ordinances against such items, but I might risk an ordinance-type citation, given that they may be reluctant to write one if you only used it on a charging dog. Being in the "rather be tried by 12 than carried by 6" club (Will?), I'd take my chances. But that's just me. Should only take one shot with the spray to get the offensive dog to steer miles clear of you into perpetuity.
My posts reflect my own opinions, and not those of the Marine Corps or the United States.

Sorry, I disagree. Do you really think that you're going to be charged with "discharging a gun in city limits" if you use your firearm to legally defend yourself against an attack? C'mom..that just doesn't happen. The court systems don't work that way.
As far as being worried about children running around, I suggest practice and good shot placement. Or use of fragmentable rounds, like the Glaser safety slug.
I realize it takes more work to defend yourself than to just be a victim, but try being proactive and taking control of your own personal safety instead of just making excuses why you can't - it'll change your whole view on life.

I don't think I want my view of life to change in that direction.
I believe you can take realistic control without being armed to the hilt and think some of the proposed alternatives are reasonable. I do not think that is "victim" mentality.
