oh yea he will get at least an hour tomorrow morning
The length of time isn't as important as the intensity -- and leaving a TIRED dog when you go.
This is all going to be needed, IMO:
Exercise him two hours in the morning before you leave, too.
And invest in some sort of treat puzzle toy to keep him busy as well.
It is good to hear that you are getting him a larger kennel indoors, but honestly, I'm not convinced that alone is going to help this. In addition to a good 1 - 1.5 hours exercise before you leave him in the AM, is there a chance you could hire someone to come mid-day and throw a ball for him for another 45 minutes or an hour? I fear this guy is telling you in no uncertain terms he is going a bit crazy... The frozen kongs already mentioned are absolutely a great idea as well.
The habit described is a clear-as-a-bell warning: this dog needs WAY more structured exercise and more one-on-one than he is getting. Self-destructive obsessions need to be exercised out of existence.
He IS going a bit crazy, and he has had a year of this?
Please let us know how it goes. (I know not everyone knows what a warning signal this is, so I am really glad you wrote in.)
hi connie the last three days i have been giving my dog more exercise and your right the length of time is not as important as how i work him hard with a ball. i now give him two kong toys that i moisen and stuff his toys with his dog food and than i freeze it over nite and give it to him in the crate when i leave for work and when i come at 4 oclock the kongs are complenty empty and he has not chewed his flanks or tail in the last three days. this is great its working!!! thanks for your help. i will keep you informed. angelo.

Angelo, you get a standing ovation.
I often figure that of the folks who receive the answer here to their dog question/problem, and it involves actual effort on their part, about 10% actually do it.
I am not being sarcastic when I say GOOD FOR YOU! You didn't just ask and talk about it; you DID it!
Keep up the good work and give yourself a good pat on the back, too.
A pat on the back and your own kong filled with your adult treat of choice!!!
REALLY wonderful news to hear!!!
We DO need a happy dance emoticon for this one, but just imagine a happy face with little stick legs and arms happily running across the post. (Hey, its the best I can do without visuals.)
