I think it's grit, dirt on cloth that does that to the canines. Sands them down. Mature tennis ball obsessed goldens and labs have totally flattened canines.
Just my guess. I don't think it's genetically soft teeth, myself.
Aaron, in that photo your dog really looks like a ferocious beast!
Since Aaron isn't posting right now, I'll repeat what he told me, and he can correct me if I'm wrong.
I do believe he's said Danke has genetically soft teeth. She was the first litter from this bitch. I think the breeder decided not to breed her anymore due to teeth and a couple other potentially genetic things that cropped up.
Even though her teeth may not look perfect and brand new, she's got plenty of drive to do the work! It was a BLAST watching her yesterday.
Most dogs if they work long enough in bitework will eventually wear down their teeth...has no effect on their abilty to hold onto a bite if they have a hard & full enough bite to compensate for the teeth wear. Jute is waring on teeth, over time, as is other suit materials. But then as Betty said, obsessive carring & chewing on toys will have the same effect over time. A fair number of them will snap/fracture a canine working, as well.
I just didn't think that at 3 yrs old, under 'normal' circumstances they would have that much wear. That was why I was wondering if there was a genentic component.
When you find the absolutely PERFECT dog...send her my way!!! You will notice that I said SHE. I really like totally driven hard-a$$ girls. I'll take one over a male any day.
Life is always full of tradoffs. Like you said...Danke brings plenty of other things to the table. The 'game' has many components not just one area in which they are judged.
With my female, while she does have the gentically full, hard bite, she also has the crazy VERY high drive that can almost boarder on a little less clear headed to hectic then wanted at times & a dog that loves biting so much that outs have always been somewhat of an issue. No conflict in it, just a dog that has fight & drive to stay on a bite no matter what the decoy does to discourage her. Points lost here too.
Danke is generally clear headed, but she is not averse to letting me know when I'm "bothering" her with corrections or impeding her attempts to devour the decoy. Hopefully Kelly will some day get some shots of Danke "blowing kisses" to me.
She can and will bite full and hard, but it takes work to get her there.
I don't know if we'll ever be able to get it consistently without the build-up.
I wouldn't trade her for the world, though.
Her enthusiasm and love for the work makes it worthwhile.
