A puppy can dehydrate and die pretty quickly from loss of fluid due to diarrhea. He is not getting nutrients, and he can't afford not to get calories in his little body. His digestive tract is inflamed and his diarrhea can quickly get bloody because of it.
A vet can give fluid support with IV and can also prescribe medication that can help to quickly resolve the diarrhea.

PS
To be totally clear, water poop means no treats at all. No tiny bits of white chicken (muscle meat) and no commercial treats. Water poop needs to be resolved immediately. The advice you didn't follow about the marker treats was given when the puppy had log poops yesterday.
No kibble.
Water poop erases all previous advice given when the poop had become logs.

Hi, Heather here. When Nick showed me the poop, it looks like pudding poop, not watery poop.
Good.
The soupy rice will get it back to logs, and then if kibble could be introduced to the rice (swapping) a little at a time, it will stay logs. A bunch of commercial treats (or a bunch of anything) to a puppy recovering from diarrhea is not a good thing.
Small frequent meals, but for now just one small meal and then see the poop before the next one.
There has to be some kind of cut off point to treating diarrhea over the Internet if improvement isn't seen within a couple days.
This would be a good time.
Why couldn't a vet help? Has a fecal test already came back negative? A second wouldn't hurt. Sometimes things can be missed.
With puppies, I understand the sense of urgency to try and get them on their normal food. Especially when they are shrinking before your eyes. But a puppy with diarrhea isn't getting much from ANY food it is eating.
the vet never called back about the fecal test. I just didn't think the vet could do much but give an IV. The last time I was in she didn't seem to think it was a big deal. He IS losing weight because of the rice and chicken meal. I don't know if I'm feeding enough chicken VS rice or what.
- Nick.
Ps. My wife is going to help with feeding to get this fixed. I'm not doing very well at this because I've gotten too close to this dog. I need to step back.

Hi Nick & Heather,
How's the pup this morning?
The vet wasn't concerned at the time because it was day one of diarrhea when you brought the pup in. It's now day 5(?). Call the office to ask about results from the fecal.
Time for another visit if his poop hasn't firmed up any. (Doesn't have to be logs yet, but should be firmer than pudding... )
