I don't think coyotes have any special protection in Cal so you can kill them any way that's not illegal by State or Fed statutes, like poisons and leg traps.
Katie I'm not sure if it was the attack at Whiting Ranch but I've ridin that trail hundreds of times, lucky I guess.

Sorry I don't agree with the statement coyotes don't bother dogs, well, my husband just said maybe it depends on where you live. But we have coyotes out here who lure a dog away and toward a pack and then kill it and eat it.. They were so brazen they approached a lady with a great dane (that was on a leash) and wasn't afraid of her at all. I would keep my dogs away from coyotes and not take a chance. I'm in california, riverside county. I would not want to kill a coyote though, unless it was attacking one of my animals.

Just to be clear, Im not saying coyotes dont tend to reproduce more when hunted, I just want to see the studies done on it. It doesnt make sense to have a huge population of coyotes in large cites where they are not hunted if that were true.
This is a pro-predator website that published this letter, but it does state the studies that were used if that helps I could see applying some of the points in the article to city dwelling yotes (instead of hunting, take cars and poisonings etc. into consideration) http://www.predatordefense.org/docs/coyotes_letter_Dr_Crabtree_11-04-97.pdf
Thank you! Thats what I was looking for.

But within city limits?

You want a yote deterrent for your son, and home? My first option would be learn how to use a firearm properly, and practice regularly. In addition to that, I'd get myself one of these.

They can and will rip a yote in half. They're very good with kids, and other animals that they are brought up with. You get one with the right attitude, and they're invaluable with protecting farm animals, your home, and their territory. They were originally bred to be flock/herd guardians in central asia many, many years ago, and are still use extensively for that purpose even today. They are ruthless when it comes to an invading predator, and have been known to kill wolf and even smaller bear. The males can be very large, in the 150lb range. If I had a farm in an area with predators around, I'd have two, but that's just me.

My previous dog (now that I think about it, he was coyote coloured)and i ran into a coyote in a field once. Im assuming it was a female. She was rolling around in the field making little yippy sounds, then she'ld stop and then trot towards us, then lay down again, roll around. Taz (previous dog) spotted her first and started towards her, but i called him back. I skirted where she was in a big circle (it was my only option) and that was when I noticed 3 more at the edge of the brush watching us intently. Gave me the creeps. I kept picturing someone coming through there with a dog they couldn't control and could just picture the little female doing her little coy dance all the time leading the dog closer to the others.
Taz was around 70lbs and this little thing had absolutely no fear.
Unless she was in heat....I really do believe she was a decoy.

this just happened about a half an hour away from me.
I would definately keep an eye on your son and remind him not to approach any type of stray animal.

That is pretty scary, Wendy.
I'll just have to keep a watchful eye on everyone outside. Everyone around where I live has seen it/them. I doubt it will be a problem for long. It'll probably be shot.

Yikes the CASD is a scary breed...but nice family dogs I hear...reminds me of the Kurdish Kangal...and other Arabic dogs (I don't know the names but my neighbor told me about them).
A tired dog is a good dog, a trained dog is a better dog. |
