Eh, I'm not a dog elitist. If people guess my dogs' breeds, or are being friendly and talking to me about my dogs, I don't think they are annoying if they don't know the breed.
I wouldn't say that I am either, I just have to shake my head at the ones that insist on her being something other then she is, even after you tell them. I love talking about my dogs with anyone that wants to know, and will listen. It's kind of funny, most people think she eats like a horse, but really she doesn't eat that much (4-5 cups of dry food a day) and stays fit and trim. I was helping one foster family with a young male dane, they couldn't keep up with his food intake, he was eating 12-14 cups of food a day and was a happy camper.
I brought my dutchie pup in to the vets office, and they've never even seen one before. *boggle* I didnt think they were that rare up here.

When my nephews were little whenever possible I'd tell them the breed of dog they were seeing (ie. "see the German Shepherd) instead of the generic "doggy."
Once we really shocked this guy when my nephew, who was about 4 years old at the time, calmly walked up and asked if he could pet the guy's Malinois.

Officer: "Can I pet your dog?"
Handler: "No please, she is not social, or a pet. She's a working dog."
Dog: staring intently at officer, postured up, deciding which part would be tastiest.
Officer: "It's OK, I have a German Shepherd at home! She'll be fine!"
Person: "What kind of dog is that?"
Handler: "She's a German Shepherd Dog."
Person: "No it's not."
Handler: "She's a Sable Shepherd, which is a different coat pattern from a saddle shepherd, which you are probably used to seeing. She's from a kennels in Holland, bred to be a working dog."
Person: "She's not big enough, and the wrong color."
Handler: "She's at her fighting weight of 70 lbs."
Person: "My German Shepherd is (insert absurd weight here... like 160 lbs.) and doesn't look anything like her. She can't be a German Shepherd!"

I don't mind people guessing my dog's breed but don't get the arguing...yet in a way I find it amusing. Some people are pretty close, they ask is he a black malinois?
This is the type I do mind:
person: hey buddy
dog: ears shoot up, eye contact
me: you can't pet him, he's not friendly
person: oh he's fine *reaches out hand*
me: *moving in front of dog* no he's not, hence the warning
person: *offended* he looks friendly, he's awful well behaved
me: thankyou, but well behaved has nothing to do with friendly
dog: wags tail lowers ears AT ME speaking to him but eyes on strangers rude invasive closeness (I was also in a doctor's office)
person: see he'll be fine *reaches AGAIN*
me: no he's not, I know MY DOG better than you do sir, how many times do I have to ask you to leave us alone, why anybody would want to pet an unfriendly dog is beyond me. *said as I left* Sometimes its the best thing to do.
I should have asked him if it was alright to go hug some stranger's kid! WHY do people think they are SO entitled to pet our dogs??

I have the horrific experience of a woman sending her 2 or 3 year old flying at me in the pet store yesterday, I was untangling a leash (we had been jumped on by a chihuahua on a flexi that had tied Ryuk to my leg I heard "GO PET THE BIG DOGGY" tried to block the kid, and fell on my face (my legs were still tied to Ryuk) and looked up to see a toddler clinging to Gambit, she'd tripped and was hanging off his ears.....
I was terrified(Gambit is still a bit mouthy, he's bouncy, he's over a head taller than a stumbling toddler, and can't stay on his feet even in the best of conditions....).....I went off on the mother from the floor while detangling from flexi lead dog who's owner was telling me "not to jerk the leash to hard" (GET YOUR DOG'S LEASH OFF OF MY LEGS AND DOG) the mother informed me that if my dog wasn't okay with a child hanging on his face he needed to be euthanized and that "you should get a lab" so I can have a nice dog....
note: Gambit was wonderful, laid down and carefully set the child down on the floor as she clung her entire weight on his ears. He then carefully stepped around her and laid down politely. His ears didn't stand up again for a few minutes, that's how hard they got crushed....
I decided to leave at this point obviously after crazy mom and child walked away.
On the way out we hit a line of people there for some vaccine event. Had to tell about 10 people that Gambit is not a fox hybrid (THAT ISN'T EVEN POSSIBLE!!!) Ryuk is not a coyote. I had one person go off on me about rabies vaccines not working on foxes and coyotes and how I shouldn't have them out in public, crazy lady followed me out the door shouting about it.
I get the breed thing a lot....Ryuk is a wolf hybrid, coyote, coyote hyrbid, GSD with a skin condition, to small, to big, half bengal cat, "rare" speckled wolfpit (I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT THAT IS), dyed, bleached, and stuffed
Gambit is a maned wolf, fox, fox hybrid, emaciated GSD, coyote hybrid, the wrong color, to small, and a wide range of dogs breeds or mixes and that his papers are fakes

My goodness Jamie. ><
That's just wow. How incredibly stupid some people are.
I've had alot of experiences with people/kids running up to my dane for a pat/hug/smooch , amazing how many parents will allow their children to run up to a strange dog and put their face right nose to nose. Then you make a remark about it and your the bad guy. =/
I can't wait till Leo "the lion cub" is a few more months old, bark on command here we come!

WTF?? Really?
Speckled wolfpit??? No way you have one of those, Ryuk is a tye-died coyote, its caused by him eating peyote.
Be careful jerking one a Chihuahua's leash you never know it could a be a rare toy coyote.
Gambit doesn't have much fox in him because he doesn't have a white tip on his tail.
I guess I better not take my "timberwolf" in Petsmart eh?

Jamie-that is sooo scary! THat's my number one pet peeve, parents allowing their kids to run up on dogs. It doesn't take a "bad dog" to bite.
I pulled a dog from the shelter Friday afternoon for rescue, an 8-10 year old white shepherd, 70+ lbs. I'm walking him out of the shelter, and this man with two little boys, maybe 5 and 8-ish, came up to me...kids running ahead.
kids - Can I pet the dog?
me - No, honey. I don't know the dog and don't know if he is safe.
dad - Oh it's ok.
Me - NO it's not. I just pulled him and he is a stray. He might bite.
dad - I'll pet him first and if he doesn't bite me, the boys can pet him.
Kids approach with their Dad, dad pets dog and the little one wraps his arms around the dog, faster than I could get a way. The dog flinched but didn't react otherwise and I walked the him swiftly to the car. Meanwhile the dog catcher is walking through the lot saying that it was okay, the dog was super friendly.
They are all looking at me like I'm a total B***h. I sat in my car for a full five minutes calming down...so thankful this dog didn't rip off that kids face.
Sometimes shelter workers and rescue volunteers do the most stupid things. I quit doing adoption events because I got too many complaints for not allowing children in the X-pens to pet the dogs. Rescued dogs in an X-pen with little kids = me on the verge of a heart attack.
